It has been celebration at the Bortyman Sports Complex in Accra, Ghana as Uganda’s Patience Anyango won gold at the 2026 ITTF Africa Table Tennis Championship.

Anyango overcame Tunisian Saidi Ela 3-2 to win the highly contest girls’ U-15 duel (6-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 7-11).

The Uganda teenager led 2-0 after winning the opening two sets 11-6 and 11-7.

The Tunisian clawed back into the game winning the subsequent two sets 11-6 and 11-7 to set up the tense and thrilling decider.

Anyango held her nerves to win the fifth set 11-7 and triumph in the set 3-2 to spark wild celebrations.

Meanwhile; Asser Sameh is the new African U15 Boys’ Singles champion. Sameh edged Nigeria’s Umar Ayoola 3-1 in a thrilling final.

The head coach of Nigeria’s national junior table tennis team, Dotun Omoniyi has disclosed that a recent camping exercise for some players at Babcock University, Ilishan Remo, Ogun State helped the squad get used to new techhiques of the game.

Sports247 reports that Omoniyi was speaking ahead of the team’s trip out of Nigeria, as they will head for two major continental competitions this week, which he admitted will further expose the players to high level standards of table tennis.

Omoniyi added that expectations are high, as one half of the contingent is scheduled to leave for Guinea this Tuesday, while the second segment will travel to Ghana on Saturday, ahead of the African Table Tennis Youth Championship, which starts on July 20 in Accra.

Ahead of both trips, Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) unveiled the squads at the weekend, while confiming that the quartet of Umar Ayoola, Habeeb Adebayo, Emmanuella Shaibu and Elizabeth Emenike will feature at the 2026 Africa Hopes Week & Challenges from July 13th to 18th in Accra.

Meanwhile, Matthew Kuti will captain Nigeria’s quartet to Guinea for the Western Region Championship, joined by Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, Funmilayo Ojo and Khadijat Okanlawon, who will defend the male and female singles titles, while also seeking doubles glory, from July 15th to 18th.

Kuti will again lead Nigeria’s male under-19 team at the 2026 African Youth Championship, alongside Sultan Agunbiade, Matthew Fabunmi and Quadri Atunwon, while the female squad features Ojo, Okanlawon, Kabirat Ayoola and Khadijah Musa.

The male under-15 category has Joseph Victor, Samson Joshua, Joseph Marvelous and Umar Ayoola, while Aishat Rabiu, Aziza Sezuo, Chinenye Okafor and Elizabeth Emelike make up the girls’ team; all of whom Omoniyi assured are pretty ready to make Nigeria proud in their respective categories.

Omoniyi added, “I am confident that all the teams will do well in the tournaments because the camping exercise has really helped the players get used to new techniques in table tennis. We are not going there to only add to the numbers but to compete for titles.”

Sports247 gathered further that Omoniyi, who led the NTTF’s technical crew during the team’s training camp at Babcock Univesity, added that all the players have been properly groomed technically and psychologically to excel during the Hopes Week Championship in Accra and afterwards in Guinea.

It was a long-desired meeting of convenience, relevance and urgency as the president of the Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA), Mark Cyrus Muwanga met with the Director of Governance at the International Table Tennis Federation, Dr. Andres Constantin.

This happened at the ITTF Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The meeting focused on key issues of governance and the future development of the Uganda Table Tennis Association.

Dr. Constantin congratulated Muwanga and his Executive Board upon their recent ratification and for conducting a successful Annual General Meeting in Uganda.

He commended UTTA for its commitment to transparency and good governance practices.

Muwanga reaffirmed UTTA’s commitment to aligning with the National Sports Act to ensure that table tennis is among the federations that will officially receive a Certificate of Compliance to run the sport in the country.

He noted that this step is critical for strengthening administration, accountability, and funding for the sport.

The UTTA President also extended congratulations to Dr. Constantin and the ITTF President, Petra Sorling, for the successful hosting of the ITTF Annual General Meeting in London.

During the discussions, Muwanga expressed Uganda’s desire to host the Africa Senior Championships in the near future.

He lauded the ITTF for identifying Uganda as one of the beneficiary countries set to receive equipment support, including international-standard tables, that will enable the country to host international events and raise the level of competition locally.

Following the meeting at ITTF Headquarters, Muwanga was also accorded the opportunity to visit the International Olympic Committee Headquarters in Lausanne and the Olympic Museum, further strengthening UTTA’s ties with the Olympic Movement.

This engagement with Dr. Constantin and the ITTF reaffirms our commitment to building a strong, compliant, and internationally competitive table tennis federation. We are grateful for ITTF’s support and believe Uganda is ready to take on bigger responsibilities, including hosting continental championships.
