The defeat comes just days after the seven-time African champions opened their campaign with a loss to Tanzania, leaving coach Uwejamomere Eboboritse’s side still searching for their first points of the tournament.

The invitational tournament in Yinchuan, China, is serving as an important preparation competition for Nigeria ahead of the WAFU B U-17 Championship later this year, which doubles as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Against Australia, the Golden Eaglets struggled defensively and found themselves chasing the game for long spells as the young Socceroos capitalised on their chances to secure an impressive victory.

Despite managing to score twice, Nigeria was unable to mount a comeback as Australia claimed all three points with a clinical attacking display.

The tournament has provided the coaching crew with an opportunity to assess the squad against quality international opposition, with several players making their first appearances in Nigeria colours.

The Golden Eaglets will now shift their attention to their final fixture against hosts China on Saturday, where they will be aiming to end the tournament on a positive note before returning home to continue preparations for the upcoming WAFU B U-17 Championship.

Samuel James: Nigerian Goalkeeper’s Rise from Mavlon FC to Finland and Transition to Super Eagles

Published

on

Nigerian goalkeeper Samuel Friday James is emerging as one of the country’s promising young football exports following his progression from Mavlon FC to Finnish side SJK Seinäjoki.

Born on April 5, 2006, the 1.95-metre goalkeeper developed his early football career at Mavlon FC, where his height, reflexes and command of the penalty area attracted attention from scouts.

His performances also helped raise his profile within Nigeria’s youth football system.

James moved to Finland in early 2025, joining the SJK setup. He initially featured for SJK Akatemia, the club’s reserve team, competing in the Ykkösliiga.

The move gave him an opportunity to adapt to European football, including its tactical demands, training methods and faster match tempo.

Rather than being thrown immediately into senior first-team football, James’s development followed a gradual path.

His time with SJK Akatemia provided regular competitive experience and allowed him to adjust to life and football in Finland.

During his reserve-team spell, he recorded several clean sheets and produced a series of impressive performances.

His progress eventually led to his inclusion in SJK’s senior setup. Publicly available player profiles list James as contracted to SJK Seinäjoki until December 31, 2026, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement for a further two years.

The goalkeeper’s development in Finland has also attracted attention in Nigeria. In September 2026, he received his first senior invitation to the Super Eagles squad after being included by head coach Éric Chelle for Nigeria’s October friendly against Russia.

The invitation marks a significant step in James’s career. It places him among the group of young goalkeepers being monitored as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its long-term options in the position.

Although he is still developing and has not yet established himself as a regular senior international, James’s journey reflects the growing route available to Nigerian players through European football.

His transition from Mavlon FC to SJK Akatemia, then toward the senior team and the Super Eagles, has been built on gradual exposure, competitive experience and consistent development.

With his imposing frame, athletic ability and growing experience in Finland, Samuel James remains a goalkeeper to watch as he continues his rise in European football.

James, who was born in the Okpo-Olamaboro area of Port Harcourt and grew through the grassroots with Garden City Panthers, is one of three new players named in Chelle’s 24-man roster for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea Bissau.

It will accord a breakthrough opportunity at left-back for James, who had trials in 2021 at FC Midtjylland of Denmark before crossing over to Lorient, but featured against them in a friendly for Avranches, as the team he wanted to join decided to watch him closely first before eventually signing him for his first contract in Europe.

He helped Lorient win the Ligue 2 title and gain promotion to Ligue 1, during which time James had also proved his quality to a huge extent, such that he soon signed with Alverca of Portugal on July 2nd, 2025, and just over a year later, he is now set to debut for the Super Eagles.
James will join up in the Eagles’ camp with team captain, Wilfred Ndidi, goalkeepers Maduka Okoye and Stanley Nwabali, defender Semi Ajayi, midfielder Alex Iwobi, forwards Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon as well as defenders Calvin Bassey and Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Arthur Okonkwo Stars Again As Charlton Secure Home Win Over Preston

Published

on

Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo continued his impressive start to life at Charlton Athletic, keeping a clean sheet on his home debut as the English Championship side defeated Preston North End 1–0.

Sports247 reports that the Nigerian goalkeeper delivered another composed performance between the posts, helping Charlton secure maximum points at home and maintain their strong start to the new campaign.

Okonkwo joined Charlton on a season-long loan from Wrexham and has wasted little time making an impression. After producing a standout display in his first appearance during Charlton’s 2–1 away victory over West Ham, the 24-year-old followed it up with another assured outing against Preston.

His latest performance was particularly important as Charlton protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle. Okonkwo remained focused throughout the encounter and helped ensure that Preston were unable to find a way past him.

The clean sheet also represents another significant milestone for the goalkeeper as he continues to establish himself in the highly competitive Championship.

Okonkwo’s statistics from his opening two league appearances tell the story of a promising beginning: Two games, two wins, nine saves and a clean sheet — Arthur Okonkwo is making an early statement in the Championship.

The goalkeeper’s eight-save performance against West Ham proved crucial in securing victory on his debut, while his home display against Preston demonstrated his consistency and ability to provide stability from the back.

For Charlton, Okonkwo’s arrival appears to have strengthened an important position, with the goalkeeper already contributing directly to two victories.

The early performances will also be welcomed by Nigerian supporters, particularly as Okonkwo continues his development and seeks to strengthen his position within the Super Eagles setup.

Although the Championship season remains long and demanding, the former Wrexham goalkeeper has given Charlton plenty of reasons to be optimistic about his contribution.

His confidence, shot-stopping ability and composure have been evident from the opening two fixtures, while the clean sheet on his home debut provides further evidence of his growing influence.

Charlton will now look to build on their positive start, with Okonkwo expected to remain a key part of their plans as the season progresses.
