The Lagos-based club announced the appointment on its official social media page, welcoming Olutayo to the role as they prepare for their next fixture in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

“We are pleased to announce Coach Olusanjo Olutayo as our interim Head Coach. Welcome on board!” the club stated.

Sports247 had earlier reported Giwa’s departure from the club on Tuesday, October 13, after he stepped down from his position as head coach.

Giwa was instrumental in Inter Lagos’ promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the NPFL, marking a significant milestone in the club’s history.

However, the newly promoted side have struggled to make an impact in the top flight this season, with their opening eight league matches producing no victories.

Their latest setback was a 3-1 defeat away to Warri Wolves on Sunday, October 11, leaving them with just two points from eight matches.

Olutayo’s appointment now gives Inter Lagos a new coaching direction as they seek to improve their performances and turn their fortunes around in the league.

The interim coach will face the immediate task of preparing the team for their next NPFL encounter against Nasarawa United on Sunday, October 18.

The match presents an opportunity for Inter Lagos to begin a new chapter under their interim manager as they continue their search for a first league victory of the 2026/27 campaign.

The club has not yet announced whether Olutayo’s appointment will become permanent or how long he is expected to remain in charge.

Sporting Lagos coach Jeffrey Buter will reunite with former coaching colleague Shola Adegun when his side travel to Jos to face Plateau United in their Matchday Nine Nigeria Premier Football League fixture on Sunday, October 18.

The match at the New Jos Stadium, scheduled for 4 p.m. Nigerian time, presents Buter with a reunion away from the touchline as Sporting Lagos look to build on their latest league victory.

Football League
Buter revealed that he shares a friendship and professional history with Adegun, who is now part of Plateau United’s technical setup.

While the reunion adds a personal dimension to the fixture, the immediate priority for both sides will be the contest on the pitch.

Sporting Lagos arrive in Jos after a 2–1 comeback victory over Bendel Insurance. They recovered from conceding inside the opening 18 seconds, with Victor Samuel equalising before Gafar Olaniyan scored the winner.

The result gave Sporting Lagos three points and offered encouragement ahead of their next assignment.

Plateau United, meanwhile, will also approach the match with confidence after defeating Kano Pillars 4–0 in their previous league outing. The result underlines the challenge awaiting the visitors, who must be prepared for a home side coming off an emphatic win.

Football League
Buter has also welcomed Odinaka Okoro’s return to the squad after a period out, while praising Samuel for his contribution against Bendel Insurance. Both developments could be important as Sporting Lagos seek to maintain their momentum.

For Buter and Adegun, Sunday’s fixture brings former colleagues together on opposite sides of the technical area. Once the match begins, however, the focus will shift to the points at stake and which team can execute its plans more effectively.

Sporting Lagos will be hoping their comeback victory proves to be a foundation for another strong performance, while Plateau United will look to make home advantage count.

EuroMatch NPFL: Sporting Lagos, Bendel Insurance Set for Sunday Battle

Published

on

Sporting Lagos will aim to end their run of consecutive draws when they host Bendel Insurance at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, on Sunday in Matchday 8 of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The match, scheduled for 4:00 p.m., presents a fresh challenge for Sporting Lagos as they look to turn their recent performances into maximum points in front of their home supporters.

The Lagos-based side have drawn their last two league matches, playing out a goalless result against Ikorodu City before securing a 1–1 draw against Kano Pillars in Katsina.

Against Kano Pillars, Sporting Lagos took the lead through Valentine Ugwu in first-half stoppage time, but Abdullahi Musa restored parity shortly after the restart.

Although the result earned them a point away from home, Sporting Lagos will know that another draw would leave them still searching for a return to winning ways.

Their next opponents, however, arrive with confidence after Bendel Insurance recorded an emphatic 4–1 victory over Barau FC in their previous league outing.

Kayode Oke scored twice in that encounter, while Suraju Lawal and Jonathan James also got on the scoresheet to complete the win for the Benin-based side.

That attacking display will give Bendel Insurance encouragement ahead of their trip to Lagos, although repeating the performance against Sporting Lagos will require another disciplined effort.

For the hosts, keeping Bendel Insurance’s attacking players under control while making better use of their own opportunities could prove crucial to the outcome.

Playing at home also gives Sporting Lagos an opportunity to respond positively in front of their supporters. However, they will need to be more decisive in the final third if they are to turn their recent draws into three points.

Bendel Insurance, meanwhile, will look to build on their victory over Barau FC and carry that momentum into Sunday’s encounter.

With Sporting Lagos seeking a return to winning ways and Bendel Insurance aiming to maintain their positive form, the meeting presents an important test for both sides as the NPFL campaign progresses.

Sports247 reports that Kano Pillars were held to another 1–1 draw, this time against Sporting Lagos in Lagos on Saturday, October 3, extending their run of consecutive draws. The Mai Su Gida had previously played out a goalless draw against Enyimba, while Sporting Lagos also entered the fixture after a barren draw against Ikorodu City in the Lagos Derby.

Sporting Lagos took the lead through Valentine Ugwu in first-half stoppage time, but Kano Pillars responded shortly after the restart when Abdullahi Musa levelled in the 48th minute following an assist from veteran Rabiu Ali.

In another encounter on Sunday, Doma United secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Warri Wolves, with Joshua Abah scoring the decisive goal in the 81st minute.

Bendel Insurance produced one of the biggest results of the weekend, defeating in-form Barau FC 4–1. Kayode Oke scored twice in the 33rd and 78th minutes, while Suraju Lawal added a third in the 86th minute before Jonathan James completed the scoring in the 90+4th minute. Aliyu Sugau scored Barau FC’s consolation from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Rangers International continued their positive run with a 3–1 victory over Abia Warriors. Godwin Obaje opened the scoring in the 37th minute, while Chidiebere Nwobodo doubled the advantage four minutes after the restart. Abia Warriors pulled one back through Emeka Obioma from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute, but Akorode Daniel sealed the victory with a late goal.

Rivers United also claimed maximum points, defeating Ikorodu City 2–0. Samson Olasupo gave the home side the lead in the 19th minute before Chinemerem Ugwueze doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time.

Kwara United came from behind to beat Ranchers Bees 2–1. Jamilu Yusuf put Ranchers Bees ahead in the seventh minute, but Toheeb Gidado levelled in the 50th minute before Stephen Gideon completed the comeback in the 77th minute.

Niger Tornadoes edged Kun Khalifat 1–0, with Ismaila Sarki scoring the decisive goal to secure all three points for the Minna-based side.

There was nothing to separate Shooting Stars and Nasarawa United, with both teams playing out a goalless draw.

In Lagos, Inter Lagos and Katsina United shared the points in a 1–1 draw. Nura Abdulbari gave Katsina United the lead in the 34th minute before Kevwe Iyede restored parity for Inter Lagos in the 42nd minute.

Meanwhile, Enyimba secured a 2–0 victory over Plateau United, with Ifeanyi Ihemekwele scoring in the 29th minute before Richard Ezinna added the second in the 68th minute.

Matchday 7 once again highlighted the competitive nature of the EuroMatch NPFL, with several teams strengthening their positions while others will be looking to respond in the next round of fixtures.
