  • Express FC 3-2 Blacks Power FC

Express FC needed a late moment of brilliance to overcome Blacks Power FC 3-2 in a thrilling Uganda Premier League encounter at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Thursday evening.

Just when the visitors looked set to leave Kampala with a point, substitute Isaac Wagoina struck in the 89th minute to give the Red Eagles their second victory of the 2026/27 campaign and lift some of the pressure on coach Morley Byekwaso.

Express started brightly and needed only six minutes to take the lead. John Kiseka finished off a Shafic Batambuze assist to put the hosts ahead.

The Red Eagles were in no mood to slow down. Six minutes later, Henry Wamala doubled their advantage, connecting with Duncan Sseninde’s delivery to leave Blacks Power with an uphill task.

At 2-0 after just 12 minutes, Express appeared to have taken firm control of the contest. However, Blacks Power gradually found their feet and began asking questions of the home defence.

Their persistence paid off in the 26th minute when Bashir Asiku headed home from Rashid Yakin’s assist to reduce the deficit.

The goal gave the visitors renewed belief, and they finished the first half pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Express, however, managed to protect their 2-1 advantage until the break.

The second half brought even more intensity, with the referee reaching for his yellow card on several occasions. Yakin was booked in the 46th minute, before Express midfielder Aggrey Atandu received a caution in the 48th minute. Blacks Power’s Rajab Fazil followed in the 50th minute.

Blacks Power came agonisingly close to drawing level in the 55th minute when Asiku’s header struck the woodwork, leaving Express relieved.

The visitors’ assistant coach, Michael Skills Lukyamwezi, was also cautioned in the 58th minute as the contest became increasingly heated.

Byekwaso made his first change in the 60th minute, bringing on Alpha Thierry Ssali for Abasi Muluya. Blacks Power responded eight minutes later by introducing Paul Elias Emokori for Andrea Noll Ogwal.

The visitors continued to push for an equaliser, but Express goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya produced a crucial save in the 75th minute to keep his side in front.

Blacks Power would not be denied for long. In the 79th minute, Fazil found the net to bring the visitors level at 2-2 and set up a tense finish.

With time running out, Byekwaso turned to his bench again, withdrawing Kiseka and Sseruyidde in the 84th minute for Wagoina and Steven Yiga.

It was a change that would make all the difference. In the 89th minute, Ssali delivered an excellent cross into the danger area, and Wagoina was on hand to finish and restore Express’ lead.

The late goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters, while Blacks Power were left with little time to mount another comeback.

Express held on through four minutes of added time to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory, with Wagoina earning the Man of the Match award for his decisive contribution.

The result gives Byekwaso some relief as Express move to 11 points from 10 matches, although they remain 12th on the league table.

Blacks Power, meanwhile, suffered their fifth defeat of the campaign but remain eighth with 13 points, one behind seventh-placed Vipers.

Express will now turn their attention to a November 19 trip to Kamwenge, where they face Kigezi HomeBoyz. Blacks Power, on the other hand, travel to Masindi to take on Kitara on November 17.

Earlier in the day, Entebbe UPPC came from behind to beat Ntugasaze 3-1 at the Kira Road Police Arena.

Ambrose Kigozi scored twice to inspire the visitors, while goalkeeper Denis Otiml contributed to Entebbe UPPC’s victory. Kennedy Muserero had given Ntugasaze the lead with their only goal in the opening half.

Vipers also returned to winning ways, beating Lugazi FC 2-0 through late goals from Princewill Tarabina and Abubakali Walusimbi. The victory ended their three-match winless run.

Uganda Martyrs turn tables on Jinja United to seize Women’s Super League lead

Published

  • FUFA Women Super League | MD 6
  • Uganda Martyrs LWFC 2-1 Jinja United WFC

Auki Angel Kigongo is making a habit of collecting individual honours this season, and her latest recognition came on an evening when Uganda Martyrs Lubaga Women Football Club climbed to the top of the FUFA Women Super League table.

Having won the accolade against Rines SS WFC and She Corporate FC, Kigongo claimed her third Woman of the Match award of the campaign as Uganda Martyrs fought back from a goal down to beat newcomers Jinja United WFC 2-1 at the Phillip Omondi Stadium on Saturday evening.

Although she did not get her name on the scoresheet, Kigongo remained a constant threat, troubling the visitors with her set-piece deliveries and attacking runs. Her performance showed her growing importance to a Uganda Martyrs side that continues to impress this season.

The hosts did not have things their way from the start. Jinja United caught them off guard in the eighth minute when Patricia Babirye found the back of the net with a well-taken finish to put the visitors ahead.

Uganda Martyrs responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Aidah Namuwonge had an opportunity in the 15th minute, but her effort was stopped by a Jinja United defender.

The pressure eventually told in the 22nd minute when Immaculate Nakanjako brought the hosts level. It was a special moment for the midfielder, who celebrated her first goal of the season to make it 1-1.

With the game back on level terms, Uganda Martyrs grew in confidence. Kigongo came close to giving them the lead in the 39th minute, but the Jinja United goalkeeper produced an excellent save to keep out her free-kick.

The hosts continued knocking on the door before half-time. In the third minute of added time, Kigongo delivered a dangerous corner that found captain Gloria Namugerwa, whose effort narrowly missed the target.

Both sides went into the break with everything still to play for at 1-1.

Uganda Martyrs needed only four minutes after the restart to complete their comeback.

Moreen Kizza sent a dangerous cross into the penalty area in the 49th minute, leaving the Jinja United defender Janat Babirye with an awkward situation. The defender turned the ball into her own net, handing the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

Namuwonge nearly extended the lead in the 56th minute, forcing another fine save from the visiting goalkeeper.

At the hour mark, Uganda Martyrs made their first change, bringing on Jesca Nalubwama for Comfort Aculu as they looked to maintain their advantage.

Jinja United were not ready to leave without a fight. They increased the pressure and came close to finding an equaliser, but Uganda Martyrs stood their ground.

In the 64th minute, the visitors’ goalkeeper made another excellent save before Deborah Nanvule, popularly known as Kante, cleared the ball off the goal line to preserve the hosts’ lead.

Goalkeeper Joan Namususi was also called into action as Jinja United tested her twice during a spell of increased pressure. She remained composed, however, to keep her side in front.

Agel Auki Kigongo

Kigongo almost put the game beyond reach in the closing stages. In the 90th minute, Sharon Kizza produced a lovely set-piece delivery to release the forward, but her effort struck the woodwork.

Uganda Martyrs survived the remaining minutes to claim their sixth-match points and, more importantly, move to the top of the standings.

The victory takes them to 13 points from six matches, with a goal difference of +5, the best in the league.

For Jinja United, the wait for their first point in the top flight continues. The newcomers have shown signs of improvement with each passing match, but Saturday’s narrow defeat was another reminder of how demanding life in the top division can be.

Elsewhere on Saturday, St Noa Girls FC returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over AMUS College WFC.

After suffering defeat last week, St Noa needed a response, and Monica Buteme provided it with a first-half strike that proved enough to secure all three points.

URA Ladies FC also maintained their positive run, recording back-to-back victories after defeating She Corporate FC 2-0.

Zainah Namuleme and Beatrice Kyokushaba scored for the Tax Collectors, while She Corporate’s difficult spell continued as their winless run stretched to three matches.

Friday’s action had seen Lady Doves FC enjoy a comfortable afternoon in front of their supporters, beating Rines SS WFC 3-0 at the Katusabe Dove Playground in Masindi.

The Believers controlled much of the encounter, with Everline Nandera Kwahero, Wardar Nalutaaya and Docus Kwikiriza finding the net to give the hosts their second victory of the campaign.

Lady Doves

A day earlier, She Maroons FC had handed KCCA Women FC their second defeat of the season. Bridget Nabisaalu’s first goal of the campaign proved decisive in the encounter.

Meanwhile, Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC’s scheduled meeting with Makerere University WFC at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium was postponed because Makerere are away in Egypt, where they are participating in the CAF Women Champions League.

After six rounds, Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC lead the standings with 13 points and a +5 goal difference.

St Noa Girls FC occupy second place with 11 points and a +4 goal difference, level on points with third-placed She Maroons FC.

KCCA Women FC have slipped to fourth with nine points, level with URA Ladies FC, who occupy fifth place but trail KCCA by two goals on goal difference.

There is no change at the top of the scoring chart, with Jesca Namanda and Angel Auki Kigongo leading the race for the Golden Boot on four goals apiece.

Agnes Nabukenya and Kamiyati Naigaga are close behind with three goals each.

The league’s Matchday 7 resumes on Saturday, November 14, with three matches scheduled:

  • Rines SS WFC vs KCCA Women FC
  • She Corporate FC vs Makerere University WFC
  • St Noa Girls Zana FC vs URA Ladies FC

Sunday, November 15, will see another three encounters:

  • Jinja United WFC vs AMUS College WFC
  • She Maroons FC vs Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC
  • Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC vs Lady Doves FC

Kigezi HomeBoyz claim maiden league victory against Mbarara City

Published

  • Kigezi HomeBoyz 2-1 Mbarara City

Kigezi HomeBoyz secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mbarara City in the Uganda Premier League encounter at Rwamwanja Stadium on Friday to register their maiden league win of the season.

The hosts came into the contest in desperate need of a positive result, having lost five consecutive matches and gone seven games without a victory.

Kigezi started on the front foot, looking to get an early breakthrough, but clear-cut opportunities were hard to come by in the opening exchanges.

In the 30th minute, Mbarara City created the best chance of the first half when Kacancu Gadaffi and Muhammed Kanyike combined to set up Ian Amanya. However, goalkeeper Norman Angufidru produced a fine save to deny the visitors.

The opening 45 minutes remained cagey, with neither side finding a breakthrough as the teams went into the break goalless.

Mbarara started the second half brightly, and five minutes after the restart, Kanyike beat his marker before weaving through a crowd of defenders, but his effort went narrowly wide.

The visitors were punished four minutes later when Joseph Jjemba calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Stuart Kafuluma, who stretched fully but failed to keep out the effort.

Mbarara continued pushing for an equaliser and finally got their reward with four minutes remaining when second-half substitute Brian Aheebwa restored parity after the visitors had applied sustained pressure.

However, Kigezi had the final say in stoppage time. Mike Walaga capitalised on a clever setup from Jjemba to find the back of the net and hand the hosts all three points.

The victory marks a significant turning point for Kigezi HomeBoyz, who will hope to build on the result as they seek to climb up the league standings.

Kigozi awarded second goal as UPPC hat-trick hero vows to keep working

Published

on

Ambrose Kigozi has been officially credited with Entebbe UPPC FC’s second goal against Ntugasaze FC, confirming his hat-trick in Thursday evening’s 3-1 Uganda Premier League victory at the Kira Road Police Arena in Kamwokya.

The decision settled the debate over who scored UPPC’s second goal after Denis Otim had initially been credited with it. A subsequent review established that Kigozi had poked the ball towards goal before Ntugasaze defender collided with goalkeeper Richard Afoyo following Otim’s goal kick.

Kigozi was consequently awarded the goal, taking his tally for the evening to three and confirming that he had single-handedly inspired Entebbe UPPC’s second-half comeback.

The Entebbe-based side had gone into the break trailing after Kennedy Muserero gave Ntugasaze the lead. However, Kigozi took charge after the restart, scoring three times to turn the game around and secure all three points.

Kigozi netted the equalizer off a Poloto delivery, an inviting cross into the area, when he rose above the Ntugasaze defence to head home. He also put the icing on the cake when they found the net again in the 77th minute with a beautiful finish to complete his brace and stretch Entebbe UPPC’s advantage.

His outstanding performance also earned him the Man of the Match accolade.

Speaking after the game, the striker expressed his delight at the victory, acknowledging the contribution of his coaches and teammates while pledging to keep improving.

“I’m happy for today. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for working together so we could get these points,” Kigozi said.

“The goals I have scored today are a very big part of me, and I am just going to continue working so that I can add to my game,” he added.

Ambrose Kigozi

The hat-trick makes Kigozi the third player to achieve the feat in the 2026/27 campaign, joining Vipers’ Usama Arafat Kiza and BUL’s Derrick Byabachwezi, who had earlier scored hat-tricks against Kataka FC.

Kigozi’s latest achievement also adds another chapter to his growing reputation as one of Entebbe UPPC’s most reliable attacking players.

During the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League season, he scored 12 goals, finishing among the leading scorers, tied around second and third place in the scoring charts. Ivan Ahimbisibwe of KCCA FC claimed the Golden Boot with 14 goals, despite Kigozi having been projected to reach 17.

He has now taken his tally to five goals this season, having previously scored against Police FC and UPDF FC before his three-goal performance against Ntugasaze.

The victory was Entebbe UPPC’s fifth of the campaign, lifting them to fourth place on 19 points, level with fifth-placed KCCA FC.

Kigozi will now look to build on his impressive scoring form when Entebbe UPPC return to action after the international break. They are scheduled to host Kataka FC at Hamz Stadium on November 19.
