Ismail Romero’s PBA status still up in the air as Meralco awaits accountability

Published

on

Ismail Romero’s status in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup is still unsettled, as Meralco hopes he will resolve matters first and foremost.

The Bolts are well aware of the controversy surrounding the Puerto Rican big man after kicking Nick Demusis in Dubai last January, and they’re crossing their fingers that he’ll be able to fix what’s needed to before deciding on his fate.

“It’s up in the air,” head coach Luigi Trillo admitted to reporters on Wednesday night.

“I mean, he’ll have to face sanctions, if there are.

“I know that’s not a FIBA-sanctioned league, I know it happened away, and it’s not with Meralco. But now that he’s part of the Meralco family, he has to carry himself better,” the veteran bench tactician furthered.

Trillo said as much on the heels of their 88-79 loss to Ryukyu at the SMART Araneta Coliseum that marked the end of their 2025-26 EASL run, which also happened to be Romero’s first game back in Manila since the incident.

The 34-year-old hogged the headlines for his attack on the former PBA player, which marred Al Ahli Tripoli’s 110-103 win over Zamboanga that also booted the Valientes out of the Dubai International Basketball Championship.

He kicked Demusis in the face and neck before the latter retreated to the baseline to escape the assault. Game officials promptly ejected Romero for the apparent retaliation following the foul he received from the winger.2025-26-EASL-Meralco-vs-Ryukyu-Ismael-Romero-2 Ismail Romero’s PBA status still up in the air as Meralco awaits accountability Basketball EASL News PBA - philippine sports news

Filipino fans were left furious and took to social media to voice their anger, with some even believing that he should have been banned for life from the tournament.

According to reports, the Games and Amusements Board—the Philippines’ regulatory body for professional sports—is looking into Romero’s case.

But with no verdict handed down as of the moment, the Puerto Rican men’s team stalwart still saw action for the Philippine side in the pan-regional competition.

In fact, he even received cheers and adoration from the home crowd that trooped to the Big Dome after spearheading Meralco’s comeback bid with a solid performance, finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds.

“I think today he showed naman that he was able to keep his composure and fight,” said Trillo of Romero, whose layup actually pulled the team to within 84-79 late in the game after trailing by as many as 20 during the third.

Still, the Bolts know that it won’t be enough for Romero to be forgiven, and so they’re hoping that he’ll earn as much, especially from Demusis himself.

“I think ang maganda roon, makipag-areglo siya,” Trillo opined. “You know, get a chance to meet the person personally, and say sorry. And if he needs to man up with that, I think that will make him a better person.”

The club is also hoping that fans will give Romero another chance—provided, of course, that he first takes accountability for his actions in Dubai.

“He’s just human. Tao lang, Masama ‘yung ginawa niya, hindi tama ‘yun. Sana he can apologize and you know, sana, bigyan ng mga fans natin ng second chance,” said Trillo. “Lahat naman tayo nagse-second chance, ‘di ba?

“I mean, guys have been banned from our league–some of the greatest players have been banned from a league, and they’ve come back, right? A different case, I know. But kailangan, aminin niya muna.”

Jolo Pascual, Bench Copada reunite with ex-UE teammates at Letran

Published

on

Colegio de San Juan de Letran is not done reloading its roster just yet.

The Squires have added another key piece to their arsenal, securing the commitment of former University of the East standout Jolo Pascual to strengthen their title defense bid in the NCAA Season 102 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

The 6-foot-2 guard will reunite with former Junior Warrior teammates Eoin Braga, Mhico Abellar, and Ethan Oraa, along with head coach Andrew Estrella — who previously served as UE’s tactician during its championship run in the UAAP Season 87 Junior High School Basketball Tournament in 2024.

“Siyempre unang-una, very excited ako kasi magkakasama ulit kami sa iisang team. Naging teammates ko na sila before kaya may chemistry at familiarity na agad kami sa isa’t isa,” Pascual told Tiebreaker Times on Tuesday afternoon.

“Masaya rin ako na si Coach Andrew ulit ang magiging coach namin dahil alam niya yung strengths namin at kung paano kami i-guide. Excited ako sa bagong journey na ’to at sa chance na makatrabaho ulit sila para ma-achieve namin yung goals namin bilang team.”

Pascual played a pivotal role in the Junior Warriors’ championship campaign in the UAAP’s 16-under tournament last Season 87, teaming up with Mav Mesina, Gab Delos Reyes, and Goodluck Okebata.

When he was promoted to the 19-and-under division in Season 88, the Tarlac City native provided steady contributions, averaging 5.29 points, 1.29 rebounds, 1.29 assists, and 0.64 steals in 17 minutes and 15 seconds per game.

“UE will always be a big part of my journey. Doon ko natutunan yung discipline, pagiging coachable, at kung paano harapin ang challenges. Yung mga natutunan ko at mga experiences ko doon ang dadalhin ko sa Letran para mas lalo pang mag-grow, not just a player,” Pascual shared.

Beyond the UAAP, Pascual also gained international experience as part of Gilas Pilipinas Youth, helping lead the squad to a flawless championship run in the 2025 SEABA U16 Qualifiers and competing in the 2025 FIBA U16 Asia Cup.

The 17-year-old guard averaged 9.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in the SEABA qualifiers before posting 7.3 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 rebounds in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup.

“Sobrang grateful ako na naging part ako ng Gilas Youth. Hindi lang dahil sa opportunity na isuot yung Pilipinas jersey, kundi dahil sa mga lessons na natutunan ko sa loob at labas ng court. Mas naging disciplined ako, mas naging mature yung mindset ko, at mas ginanahan akong magtrabaho para maabot yung susunod na level,” Pascual expressed.File-photo-Bench-Copada-1 Jolo Pascual, Bench Copada reunite with ex-UE teammates at Letran Basketball CSJL NCAA News UAAP UE - philippine sports news

Letran also secured another former UE player in Bench Copada, who previously teamed up with Pascual and others during the National Capital Region’s bronze-medal finish in the 2026 Palarong Pambansa last May.

Copada saw limited action in the Junior Warriors’ fifth-place finish in the Season 88 Boys Basketball Tournament, appearing in only six of 14 games.
