Zurkhaneh: Team Uganda envisages progressive future after positive show at 5th World Cup in India

The Uganda Zurkhaneh national team took part in the 2025 Zurkhaneh World Cup held at the Jamia Millia Islamia University in the New Delhi city, India.

This was during the Zurkhaneh sports and Koshti Pahlavani World Cup championship, a prestigious international event celebrating tradition, strength and global unity through the ancient Persian martial arts and athletic culture.

Uganda was among the seven countries that took part alongside fellow African country, Tanzania, the hosts India, Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Belarus.

 Team Uganda had the likes of Deo Bago, Stephen Okra Kurilayo, Jonathan Mugwisa, Hussan Lubega, Shafik Kulumba, Charles Mulindwa, Robert Kizito, Abdallah Deyoongera and Ivan Wong Ssenyondo.

“We traveled well and performed to the best of expectations with three medals. We also learnt of lessons from the very best in this sport. The future of Zurkhaneh in Uganda is very bright” Eddie Gombya, president of the Uganda Zurkhaneh Federation remarked.

The game remains on the rise in Uganda with different players being recruited from a number of clubs across the country.
