A lean but talent-packed women’s field and a deep men’s roster will tee off on Wednesday as the National Golf Association of the Philippines National Stroke Play Championship gets underway at the wide-open Pradera Verde Golf and Country Club in Lubao, Pampanga.

The women’s field may be small in number, but it boasts some of the country’s brightest young talents, led by Tashana Balangauan, Precious Zaragosa, Crista Therese Minoza, and twins Mona and Lisa Sarines. They will vie for the prestigious title and look to join the tournament’s distinguished list of champions, which includes Rianne Malixi and Mafy Singson.

Minoza dominated the Junior PGT circuit through last year, while Balangauan, Zaragosa, and Mona Sarines have all captured titles in the 15-18 division, making them well-tested for the demands of a 72-hole championship.

Jules Gaerlan enters as the most experienced player in the women’s field, having competed in several Ladies Philippine Golf Tour (LPGT) events as an amateur over the past few years.

On the men’s side, Jet Hernandez and Rolando Bregente headline a large and competitive field after sharing fourth place at the Singapore Amateur Open two weeks ago. Also drawing attention are two second-generation golfers hoping to match the achievements of their fathers.

Zach Villaroman, son of 1984 Philippine Amateur champion Carito Villaroman, is among the players to watch. The elder Villaroman won the national title when the championship featured both stroke play and match play. Now coached by his father, Zach aims to capture the biggest title of his young career.

John Robert Bernis is also seeking to follow in his father’s footsteps. His father, Jun Bernis, starred for Canlubang in the Philippine Airlines Interclub before competing on the Philippine Golf Tour and won the national amateur championship in 2004 at Canlubang. Still in high school, the younger Bernis has already shown the talent to contend for a national crown.

Another intriguing contender is Ralph Batican, Bukidnon’s top amateur and a protégé of Philippine golf legend Frankie Minoza. Honing his game at Del Monte under Minoza’s guidance, the teenage standout has developed into one of the tournament’s most promising contenders.

Missing from the men’s field is Shin Suzuki, who remains in the United States competing in that country’s national championship.

The National Stroke Play Championship marks the first of two major tournaments the NGAP will stage over the next two weeks. It will be followed by the National Match Play Championship at the historic Luisita Golf and Country Club, where Singapore Amateur Open champion Grace Quintanilla, who prevailed in a dramatic five-hole playoff against a Chinese opponent, is expected to compete.

Grace Quintanilla birdied three of her final four holes to recover from a shaky start on Thursday, carding a one-under-par 70 to stretch her lead to six shots heading into the final round of the women’s division of the Singapore Amateur Open at the historic Bukit Course of the Singapore Island Country Club.

The Cebuana teenager played her back nine in four-under 32 to finish with a 54-hole total of 208. She rallied after dropping three shots over a five-hole stretch from No. 3, while home bet Amelie Ng fired her best round of the week, a 69, to move into a tie for second with Hong Kong China’s Xizihan Wang at 214.

Another Hong Kong China bet, Hei Tung Leung, who started the day just one shot behind Quintanilla, tumbled out of contention after a disastrous 78. Leung bogeyed eight of her first 12 holes and now trails by nine shots entering the final round.

Quintanilla is now on the verge of one of the biggest victories of her young career after shooting par or better in all three rounds. She opened with a 67 on Tuesday before grinding out a 71 on Wednesday to keep Leung at bay.

Meanwhile, Jet Hernandez fired a four-under 68 to move within three shots of leader Jonty Lunzon in the men’s individual competition. The Filipino also caught Rolando Bregente in a tie for fourth with 18 holes remaining.

A senior at the University of Denver in the United States, Hernandez caught fire with three straight birdies from No. 13 before making his second bogey of the day on the 16th. He bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 18th to build momentum heading into Friday’s final round.

Bregente, who led after an opening-round 64 on Tuesday, posted his third straight sub-par round with a 69. However, a closing par left him unable to keep pace with the leaders.

Lunzon shot a 66 for a 54-hole aggregate of 200, holding a one-shot lead over Hong Kong China’s Markus Lam, who carded a 65.

Australia’s Max Moring, who began the day on top after a brilliant second-round 62, cooled off with a 71. He salvaged his round with birdies on the 15th and 18th holes and will enter the final day in third place, one shot ahead of the determined Filipino duo of Hernandez and Bregente.

Battling through a lingering left-hand injury and an hour-long weather delay, Yvon Bisera continued to showcase remarkable grit and composure, firing a second straight three-under 69 to build a three-shot lead after two rounds of the ICTSI Pradera Verde Championship at the Arayat course in Lubao, Pampanga, Wednesday.

Bisera delivered another steady performance, fending off an early challenge from first-round co-leader Harmie Constantino before methodically taking control with a near-flawless round highlighted by timely birdies and disciplined recovery play.

Despite playing through discomfort, the Davaoeña ace wasted little time asserting herself, birdieing Nos. 2 and 3 to pull clear of Constantino. A bogey on the fifth briefly slowed her momentum, but she quickly regained control with birdies on Nos. 10 and 12. While Bisera capitalized on her scoring opportunities, Constantino struggled to do the same and turned in 36.

From there, Bisera relied on solid course management and steady putting. She bounced back from a bogey on the 17th with a birdie on the closing hole to card another 69 and finish 36 holes at six-under 138, putting herself in prime position to capture her second Ladies Philippine Golf Tour title of the season.

The 18-hole leader now stands just one strong round away from adding another trophy to an impressive start to the year, having won the ICTSI Lakewood Championship in a playoff last March.

“I played much steadier yesterday. I didn’t make a single bogey,” said Bisera in Filipino as she compared her two rounds.

She rued a costly three-putt on the par-4 fifth that halted a birdie-birdie start from No. 2. But she quickly regained her rhythm, collecting three birdies against just one bogey on the back nine to seize firm control heading into the final round of the P750,000 championship.

Constantino lost ground after mixing two birdies with two bogeys for an even-par 72, dropping to second at 141. Chihiro Ikeda struggled to a 74 but held on to third at 144, leaving the rest of the field needing a low final round to mount a serious title challenge.

Chanelle Avaricio, who rallied from behind to win the Pinewoods Championship last week, slipped further off the pace with a 75 after an opening 71. Her 146 total left her eight strokes behind Bisera entering the final round.

Gretchen Villacencio fired the day’s best round of 69 to climb to fifth at 147, though she remained nine shots back. Daniella Uy carded a second straight 74 for a 148 aggregate to stay within striking distance, albeit facing a steep uphill climb.

Bisera credited her comfort on the challenging layout to her familiarity with both the greens and the course setup.

“I feel more comfortable on greens like these because they’re becoming familiar to me,” she said. “I also like the yardage since most of my approach shots are from within 120 yards, which really suits my game.”

Her confidence on the greens and favorable approach distances have allowed her to play more aggressively while maintaining consistency.

Still, despite carrying a commanding lead into the final 18 holes, Bisera knows there is little room for complacency.

“I just need to keep playing steadily and avoid any more three-putts,” she said. “Hopefully, my hand won’t bother me anymore as well.”

With one round remaining, Bisera remains focused on executing her game plan, knowing another composed performance could be enough to secure another championship.

Her impressive showing this week has come despite the nagging hand injury that has hampered her in recent tournaments. After a confidence-boosting runner-up finish at the Singapore Ladies Masters, Bisera managed only a fifth-place finish at Caliraya Springs before dropping to 10th at Pinewoods last week — a mountain course she admitted did not suit her game.

The relatively flatter terrain of Pradera Verde’s Arayat layout, however, has brought out the best in her. Comfortable off the tee and precise with her irons, Bisera has backed up her confidence with consecutive rounds of 69, combining patience, consistency, and resilience to emerge as the player to beat heading into the final round.
