Filipinas subs Mallie Ramirez, Jael-Marie Guy aim to bring same spark vs Iran
Facing an early deficit and grueling conditions, the Filipinas turned to their bench to shift momentum in their 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Group A match against South Korea last Thursday at Robina Stadium.
Although the Philippines ultimately fell 3–0 to the Taegeuk Ladies, coach Mark Torcaso brought on attacking substitutes Mallie Ramirez and Jael-Marie Guy to inject energy into the squad. The two were tasked with sparking a team that had been chasing the game since the 12th and 15th minutes, after quick goals from Jeon Yu-gyeong and Park Soo-jeong.
The match proved to be as much a test of endurance as of skill.
With kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.—the peak of Queensland’s heat—the intense conditions forced the Filipinas to dig deep in search of a result.
Ramirez was the first to enter, joining Jourdyn Curran to replace Isabella Pasion and Chandler McDaniel at the start of the second half.
The 21-year-old forward from Cebu said Torcaso instructed her to disrupt South Korea’s rhythm and maintain a high work rate.
“Coach Mark told me, ‘You’re going to go in the second half.’ I think one of my goals was just to make an impact and to leave everything I have out on the field to the last minute, second,” Ramirez noted.
“Just be able to create chaos and disrupt their defense was really my goal.”
Jael-Marie Guy also came off the bench in the 60th minute, replacing Ariana Markey. For her, the substitution was a chance to provide a vocal presence while seeking a breakthrough in the final third.
“I think that with the heat and with how we conceded early in the game, I wanted to come in the second half shifting the energy, and hopefully bring an offensive presence and some motivation,” Guy shared.
“I was trying to bring a lot of communication, help the team push through the last 45 minutes.”
While the 3–0 loss was a setback, the focus now shifts to the Philippines’ final Group A match against Iran this Sunday. It is a must-win for the Filipinas, who need three points to keep their qualification hopes alive as a top-ranked third-placed team.
Securing a spot in the knockout stage is critical not only for their Asian Cup campaign but also to keep their dream of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil alive.
Amid the high stakes, the pressure is on Ramirez, Guy, and the rest of the squad to respond after the tough loss to South Korea.
“I think this was not really the result we wanted, but we’re just going to keep pushing onto the next game,” Ramirez said.
Guy echoed the sentiment, promising increased intensity in the crucial fixture: “In the next game, you can expect us to fight our hardest and to come in even harder than we did for this one.”

Jaclyn Sawicki seizes the moment in Filipinas’ World Cup-clinching win
By: Icko de Guzman
Jaclyn Sawicki had never been the name you expected on the scoresheet — until the moment everything was on the line.
In a match that demanded heroes, the Filipina midfielder delivered one of the biggest goals of her career. She rose high above the defense to meet Jael Marie Guy’s cross with a looping header that found the back of the net in the 52nd minute.
More known for orchestrating plays than finishing them, Sawicki seized her moment. Her goal, coming just five minutes after Angela Beard’s opener, powered the Philippines to a commanding 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the playoff — and secured back-to-back appearances in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
For Sawicki, it was instinct meeting opportunity.
“I obviously don’t score a lot of goals. My job is to create goal-scoring opportunities for our forwards,” said Sawicki, who traces her roots to the Cordillera region. “But the moment was there. I saw the space, made the run, and when Jael (Guy) went one-on-one with the defender, I knew she could whip in a great cross.
“I took the chance, trusted the players behind me, and it worked out for us.”
With the Filipinas now heading for their second straight World Cup, Sawicki’s belief in the journey remains as steady as ever.
“At the start of this cycle three years ago, I was asked if I’d push for another World Cup,” she reflected. “My answer was always the same — one day at a time. And now, we’re here.
“It only makes sense to go for one more.”

Filipinas punch ticket to World Cup with rout of Uzbekistan
By: Icko de Guzman
Since their exit from the FIFA Women’s World Cup in July 2023, the Filipinas vowed to return to the world stage.
Under the warm Thursday afternoon sun at Gold Coast Stadium, they did just that — completing their comeback in dramatic fashion.
On their third attempt at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026, the Philippines delivered a storybook ending, securing a place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the play-off.
With nothing less than a win needed to secure a second consecutive World Cup appearance, Torcaso rolled out a strong starting XI.
Veterans Olivia McDaniel, Angela Beard, Sara Eggesvik, Sofia Wunsch, Carleigh Frilles, Chandler McDaniel, and Katrina Guillou all returned to the lineup after not starting in the loss to Japan. That left Jael Marie Guy as the lone youngster among the experienced core.
The first half was a tight affair, with both sides creating chances.
Zarina Mamatkarimova tested Olivia McDaniel in the 26th minute, while Nilufar Kudratova sent her effort over the crossbar a minute later.
At the other end, Beard had two golden opportunities in the 36th and 38th minutes — first rushing onto a loose back pass only to be denied by Maftuna Jonimqulova, then seeing a point-blank attempt gathered by the Uzbekistan keeper.
The Filipinas came out firing after the break, with Guy orchestrating both goals to seal the result and secure the Philippines’ place among the 32 teams bound for Brazil.
Beard broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half, converting a superb volley off Guy’s cross after her earlier misses.
Five minutes later, Jaclyn Sawicki doubled the advantage, rising to meet another precise delivery from Guy on the right flank and powering home a well-taken header.
Philippines head coach Mark Torcaso was left almost speechless after the achievement.
“I’m a little bit lost for words, to be honest. But the one thing I will say is we came here with a very young squad — an average age of 23 or 24,” said Torcaso after the match.
“To have one of our future stars — someone I believe can be a star on the world stage — play so well in a big game like this and help us qualify for the World Cup is a testament to her and her family. But Jael (Guy) is just one of a number of players coming through our program who will be successful for our national team for many years,” he went on.
“I’m extremely proud of every single player, including those who have already experienced playing on the big stage. The girls have been outstanding over the last six weeks, and all the work we’ve put in has led to this moment.”
Guy, who was named Player of the Match, felt over the moon as her contributions proved decisive in the country’s World Cup campaign.
“I mean, it’s kind of a blur,” said Guy. “When you’re in the game, you just want to get towards goal. Going into the second half, we knew we had to score. That was the goal, to win.
“So whenever I got the ball, I just thought: get forward, find teammates in dangerous areas.”
With the win, the Philippines joined hosts Australia, along with Japan, China, and South Korea, in securing their tickets to Brazil. Chinese Taipei and North Korea will contest the remaining berth later today.

Filipinas eye World Cup berth in decisive clash vs Uzbekistan
By: Icko de Guzman
For one last shot at the world stage, the Filipinas aim to craft another storybook ending in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 campaign as they face Uzbekistan for the remaining outright berth to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 on Thursday, March 19, at Gold Coast Stadium.
This marks the Filipinas’ second appearance in a World Cup playoff, following their 2018 defeat to South Korea, where the Koreans secured a 5-0 win to book their place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019.
This time, the Filipinas enter the high-stakes clash determined to bounce back after a 0-7 setback against two-time champions Japan last Sunday, a result that pushed the team into this decisive playoff for the coveted World Cup spot.
Standing in their way is Uzbekistan, which is chasing a historic first-ever World Cup qualification.
The two sides last met in a friendly in Manila that ended in a 2-2 draw, with Chandler McDaniel and Merryl Serrano scoring for the Philippines.
Head coach Mark Torcaso believes the team is ready to rise to the occasion, emphasizing the squad’s resilience heading into this must-win encounter.
“Our players are well equipped to deal with a big match like this, but more importantly, they’re supportive of every single player and staff within our group, so we’re really excited for the match,” said Torcaso. “We know it’s going to be tough. Every game we’ve played in this tournament has been tough.
“We’re ready to compete against the best teams, and we’re embracing the challenge of this tournament. It will be a difficult game, but our players are mentally prepared.”
Carleigh Frilles echoed that mindset, as the Filipinas embrace the pressure—a familiar companion—while standing just one win away from securing a second consecutive World Cup berth.
“We came into this tournament aiming to go as far as we can, with the main goal of qualifying for the World Cup,” said Frilles. “It’s one more game to reach that goal, and we’ll keep doing everything we can.
“I’ve been in situations like this before, and pressure is something we embrace. As Jackie (Sawicki) said before, pressure is a privilege. We’re honored to wear this badge and represent our country. Staying grounded in that gives us focus, to do our best and make our country proud.”
If the Philippines falls short of an outright berth, they will still have one final pathway to the World Cup through the Intercontinental Play-off scheduled later this year.
