VIDEO: Disaster Averted in Ogba! Bricklayer’s Last-Minute Warning Saves Dozens as School Building Collapses in Lagos
A potential tragedy was narrowly avoided on Moday, March 9, 2026, after a bricklayer working on a building housing Yemco Nursery, Primary and Secondary School in Ogba Aguda, Lagos, warned occupants to immediately evacuate moments before the structure collapsed.
The three-storey building, located behind the County Hospital in the area, had the ground floor and first floor occupied by the school, while the second and third floors served as residential apartments for tenants, including the landlord and landlady, both said to be in their 80s.

According to eyewitness accounts, the bricklayer who was working on the building suddenly became concerned about the stability of the structure. Sensing imminent danger, he quickly alerted everyone inside the building and urged them to leave immediately.

Students, teachers, residents, and other occupants quickly evacuated the premises following his warning. Less than 30 minutes after the evacuation, the building reportedly collapsed completely, sending debris across the surrounding area.
Fortunately, because of the early warning and swift response, no injuries or casualties were recorded. The timely alert ensured that all students and residents were safely out of the building before the collapse occurred.
Residents in the neighborhood expressed relief that what could have been a devastating incident ended without loss of life. Some community members described the bricklayer’s action as heroic, noting that his quick thinking prevented a major disaster.
The collapsed structure is located close to Kokumo Street, an area familiar to many residents of Ogba Aguda. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the collapse and assess nearby buildings to ensure safety in the neighborhood.
For many in the community, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and prompt action when structural safety concerns arise. Thanks to the bricklayer’s timely warning, what could have been a tragic event ended with everyone safe.
