  • Match Result: Uganda 143/3 beat Eagles XI 137/7 by 7 wickets.
  • Player Of Match: Henry Ssenyondo (3/21)

Uganda’s Cricket Cranes picked up their first win on their Tour to Namibia with a confident seven-wicket win against the hosts.

The visitors lost by eight wickets on Wednesday and needed to win game two to keep the series alive ahead of the final game on Namibia’s Independence Day.

Bilal Hassun

Uganda made one change to the side with Bilal Hassun coming in for Juma Miyagi. Riazat Ali Shah won the toss and asked to bowl first.

The Cricket Cranes struck early with two quick wickets, but the discipline of the bowlers is what gave them the edge, as the Namibian batters were kept quiet inside the power play.

Player of the Match, Henry Ssenyondo (3/21), bowled a miserly spell of slow left arm spin and made sure that there is no getting away for Namibia, who eventually stopped at 137/7 in their 20 overs.

Kenneth Waiswa (2/22) and Joseph Baguma (1/25) were the other bowlers with wickets in the game.

In the chase, Robinson Obuya (14) and Simon Ssesazi (20) looked assured until the former departed, but there was little to worry about with Gerald Olipa (39) taking charge of proceedings together with Ali Shah (46 not out).

Olipa threw away his wicket even with no pressure around him but because Uganda was ahead of the game, his departure never derailed the run chase, as Anas Baig (19) finished the job with his captain.

Anas Baig

It was a much-improved performance for the Cricket Cranes, but there will be concern for them in terms of injuries, as both Cyrus Kakuru and Cosmas Kyewuta were unable to finish the game due to injuries sustained during the game.

The team will take a break and return in action on Saturday, March 21, which happens to be Namibia Independence Day, and with the series tied at 1-1, the winner takes all.

Matchday 7 Results

  • Morning: Mburo Blasters 234/6 beat Kyoga Avengers 208/6 by 26 runs
  • Afternoon: Victoria Strikers 218/8 beat Bunyonyi Warriors 159 all out by 59 runs

Mburo Blasters beat early pace setters Kyoga Avengers in a high-scoring game in the morning to leave the Avengers vulnerable at the top and within touching distance of Blasters, who are in second place.

Kyoga Avengers won the toss and elected to bowl first. Charles Mushemeza (75) and Fahad Mutagana (37) put on an opening stand of 82 that laid a great foundation for Mburo Blasters with the returning Riazat Ali Shah (54) notching up his second half-century of the tournament to help his side finish on a commanding 234/6 in their quota of 20 overs.

In reply, Cyrus Kakuru (77) anchored the run chase from the start, taking the attack to the bowling of Mburo Blasters, but the regular loss of wickets kept them behind, and only some rear guard resistance from Captain Juma Miyaji (45) kept the game alive.

Mburo Blasters picked up their fourth win of the tournament and are only two points behind table leaders Kyoga Avengers.

In the afternoon, Victoria Strikers put on their highest score of the tournament in a team effort that saw them pile on 218 runs. It could have been more if it wasn’t for the loss of wickets in the middle.

Simon Ssesazi (54) was outstanding with the bat, while Ahurra Amos (40) and Matthew Musinguzi (22) also made handy contributions.

In reply, the destructive Robinson Obuya (15) and Anas Baig (30) threw the kitchen sink at the bowling of Victoria Strikers, but their high-risk game saw the loss of Obuya, and that turned the game in favour of Victoria Strikers.

The departure of the two slowed down the run chase for Bunyonyi Warriors, who couldn’t find the range in chasing down a big total.

Victoria Strikers picked up back-to-back wins that allow them to keep up with the top leaders.

On Matchday 8, Kyoga Avengers take on Victoria Strikers while Bunyonyi Warriors take on Mburo Blasters in the afternoon.

Kyoga Avengers kept their unbeaten record intact with another strong performance against bottom-of-the-table Victoria Strikers.

Gerald Olipa (54) and Cyrus Kakuru (50) scored half-centuries for Kyoga Avengers with the former hitting six maximums in the total haul of 181/6. Captain Juma Miyaji provided some late-order hitting that ensured that they had something to bowl at on a flat deck.

In reply, Robinson Obuya (64) and Anas Baig (62) tore into the Mburo Blasters bowling line-up and put on an opening stand of 105 inside 9 overs before the latter departed.

However, the departure of Anas was the sliding door moment for Mburo Blasters, who were able to regroup and slow down the run chase.

The slow bowling options for Mburo Blasters nicked the game for them as they combined to pick up five wickets for just 53 runs. Mburo Blasters maintained second spot in the tournament while Bunyonyi Warriors remain in third place with just one win.
