Football Commercialization: Uganda Premier League lures brands marketing gurus, visit different stadia & clubs

Ann Handley, an award winning motivational speaker, a Wall Street journal bestselling author and a partner at Marketing Profs is remarkably spot-on when she opens up about promotional gimmicks and generally marketing.

‘Great marketing starts with great stories. Be unique, inspire and connect’ Handley is remarkably quoted.

This is the same notion that the FUFA Super League Limited (FSLL) whose premier product, StarTimes Uganda Premier League is fronted.

The UPL is a viable lucrative product that brings together the 16 elite clubs in the top flight division of Uganda’s pyramid.

This league, now at the final bend of the 2025/26 season enjoys quality airtime across the different media platforms with Pay TV StarTimes leading the way for live television broadcasts via Sanyuka Television with feed to FUFA TV.

Others avenues as Radios, Print and the sprouting Online platforms also give the UPL equal relevance.

It is upon this rich background that the FSLL have sought for cardinal strategic partnership with the Uganda Marketers Society (UMS) to further promote and market the Ugandan league to the different corporate brands.

On Saturday, 21st March 2026, it was a domestic tour around the different sports Arenas (facilities) and some clubs that feature in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

This tour involved officials from the FSLL led by Jovin Jenkins Matovu (UPL chief marketing officer),  Charity Winnie Kamusiime Asiimwe (Uganda Marketers Society president), different marketing heads and brand representatives.

From the assembly point Zimbali (along Lumumba Avenue), the marketers toured the MTN Omondi stadium – Lugogo, Hamz stadium (Nakivubo War memorial grounds), FUFA Stadium – Kadiba, Police stadium – Kira Road in Kamwokya and finally at the gigantic Mandela National Stadium – Namboole.

More stadia around the country will be visited at the opportune timing and convivence.

The key purpose of this tour was to give the marketers a hands-on experience of the sports amenities, the opportunities that would accrue from associating with the different clubs in the box and the awesome positional points for the brands in and out of the sports stadia.

“The Uganda Marketers Society in partnership with the Uganda Premier League is privileged to have such a domestic tour around the different stadia as the different marketers and brand representatives have a hands-on experience and learn more about football” Kamusiime, president of UMS remarked.

The marketers and brand representatives were briefed about the history of the sports facilities visited, seating capacity, on-going renovations, modifications and future plans, opportunities of brand placements among others.

“This stadia tour was well planned and intended to help the clubs meet up the different marketers from the different companies. This is just the start as more engagements will definitely yield future rewards” Matovu, the UPL chief commercial officer (CCO) noted.

The companies involved included banking institutions, insurance firms, foods and beverage companies and Vision Fund Uganda.

Ugandan clubs can also exploit opportunities from Telecommunication companies, energy, security, aviation as well as Gaming firms.

Afcon 2027 qualifiers: South Sudan and Lesotho secure their spots in Group Stages

  • South Sudan 0-1 Djibouti [Agg: 4-1]

South Sudan and Lesotho advanced to the main qualifiers of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Pamoja 2027 after overcoming Djibouti and Seychelles respectively.

The Bright Stars, despite suffering a 1-0 loss in Juba advanced 4-1 on aggregate after they had won the first leg with a comprehensive 4-0 victory a few days earlier.

After a goalless first half, Djibouti found the breakthrough in the 77th minute when Samuel Temidayo finished off a move assisted by Gabriel Dadzie to give the visitors their only goal across the two legs.

Elsewhere, Lesotho came from a goal down to beat Seychelles 2-1 in Bloemfontein and progress on the same aggregate score following a goalless draw in the reverse fixture.

Brandon Labrosse had given the visitors a first half lead but second half goals from Lebohang Lesako and Sera Motebang turned the tie around.  

Action in the preliminary round will come to end on Tuesday with four other nations joining South Sudan and Lesotho to compete in the group stage qualifiers.

Afcon 2027 will co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania as confirmed by CAF president Patrice Motsepe despite infrastructural challenges at the moment.

Kawempe edge Lady Doves to maintain grip at the top

Kawempe Muslim had to dig deep to overcome Lady Doves on Sunday to maintain their lead at the top of the FUFA Women Super League table.

In the game played at Kawempe Muslim playground, the Valley Warriors secured a 1-0 win thanks to Latifah Nakasi’s goal.

Nakasi got the lone goal in the 51st minute and this eventually turned out to be decisive moment of the closely contested game.

With the title race between Kawempe and She Corporate tight, the find bend leaves no room for dropping of points.

After today’s games, Kawempe lead the table with 42 points, one ahead of She Corporate who had to come from two goals down to defeat Rines 3-2 in Wakiso.

There are only five games left to the end of the season and every point at the moment matters. Kawempe will face Asubo Ladies, Makerere University, Rines, Kamapala Queens and Olila High School in that order.

On the other hand; She Corporate’s final games will see them take on Kampala Queens, Olila High School, St. Noa Girls, Uganda Martyrs and She Maroons.

SC Villa’s Hassan Mubiru attracts attention from regional giants

SC Villa wonderkid Hassan Mubiru is a subject of interest from regional clubs Simba, Singida Black Stars and APR, Kawowo Sportshas learnt.

Mubiru is enjoying a fantastic season with record league champions SC Villa and has been involved in over ten goals in all competitions so far helping the Jogoos reach the quarter finals of the Stanbic Uganda Cup as well as mount a title challenge in the league.

The Express academy graduate leads the assists chart for the Blues with six in the league and has scored twice from wide areas.

Mubiru, who can ably operate as a no.9, 10 and also play on both wings still has a more than a year left on his contract but the suitors are willing to buy it off.

Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars, home to Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho are the front runners in the race for Mubiru’s signature but compatriots Simba and Rwanda’s record champions APR are also interested.

It remains to be seen whether Villa will let go of one of their most important players but a huge transfer window awaits.
