An hour after the gross players had teed off during round two of the Pearl Of Africa (POA) Golf Series in Entebbe, the heavens set loose with a heavy downpour.

The rain lasted for about 30 minutes before the action resumed. Overnight leader in the elite gross category, Joseph Cwinya-ai playing with Martha Babirye and Elton Thembo in the main pressure group teed off moments later.

Upon completing round two, Cwinya-ai was 4-under-67 on the day; and over all stood at 7-under.

He dubbed the rains before action as a complete blessing in disguise.

“The rains made the greens more softer and they were responding to my wedge approach shots. It was a blessing in disguise” he spoke after the round where he recorded 6 birdies, 10 pars and 2 bogies.

Ironically, the two bogies Cwinya-ai registered came on the Entebbe course’s dog-legged par-4 holes 4 and 17.

Hole 17 at Entebbe club is christened as the Deo Akope Challenge, for the long history and troubles to professional legend, Akope.

“As I teed off hole 17, I recalled how I lost the 2024 Uganda Amateur Open title on that particular hole. The memories disorganized me and I ended up messing” he recounted with bitterness.

Cwinya-ai started the day brightly with a birdie on the par-5 hole 1 and two successive pars on 2 and 3.

Then came the bogie on the dog-leg par-4 hole 4. He fired up with three consecutive birdies on holes 5, 6 and 7. He parred the tricky par-3 hole 8 and ended the front course with a level score on par-4 hole 9.

He crossed to the back nine with excitement; scoring par scores on 10, 11 and 12 before another birdie on 13. In the last five holes, he got three pars on 14, 15 and 16 with a bogie on the 17 and summarized the Holy Thursday with a birdie on the par-5 hole 18.

Target ahead of final round:

Cwinya-ai is definitely out of sight from the rest of the pack; but still harbors personal ambitions; to hit double figures with under-scores.

“This is more literally than done” he bragged. “It’s me competing against my own self. Though I have a target now; to end the tournament with a double digit under score after the three rounds” Cwinya-ai who is caddied by a female, Hadijah Nampijja states.

Former Uganda Amateur Open champion Andrew Ssekibejja is second on the leaderboard with +1 overall having scored 1-under during round two.

Abdullah Kakooza and teenager Shaka Kariisa are joint third with +2 (144) as Joseph Kasozi, Godfrey Kambale and Juma Abiti are jointly tied in fifth position with +4 (146).

Martha Babirye is the best leader, jointly tied in 8th place with Elton Thembo and Dominic Musoke (147).

The elite gross golfers conclude their championship on Good Friday.

Meanwhile, Grace Kasango leads the professionals’ wing with 4-under-67. He is three strokes better than the duo of Davis Kato and Ronald Rugumayo (70).

The professionals will wind business on Holy Saturday, on the same day as the subsidiary golfers.

The elite gross are vying for a total kitty of Ug.Shs 5,000,000 as the pros have Ug.Shs 27,000,000 to battle for.

Winners in 2025:

Michael Tumusiime won the Entebbe leg; John Musiimenta smiled on the podium as champion at Uganda Golf Club whilst Joseph Kasozi was triumphant in Lugazi for the amateurs.

Galven Green fires 64 to seize one-shot lead in ADT Open

Published

on

Malaysia’s Galven Green insisted he did nothing special on Friday at tree-lined Luisita, but the result of his third round was anything but ordinary.

“I just came out and played, not doing anything special,” Green said moments after carving out an eagle-aided, bogey-free eight-under-par 64 to grab a one-shot lead over Michele Ortolani heading into the final round of the $100,000 BingoPlus Philippine ADT Open. “I was just finding fairways and hit greens and fortunately made some putts.”

Green, who drained a 20-footer for eagle on No. 9 to turn in 31, matched the low round of the week set by Englishman Thomas Plumb in the opening round on Wednesday. Sean Ramos and Angelo Que remained the only Filipinos with mathematical chances entering the final 18 holes after both stayed on par for a third straight round.

“I’m just going to go out there and do the best that I can do,” said Green, who sits on a 54-hole aggregate of 202 when asked about his final-round mindset. “There’s a lot of golf to be played still.”

The 22-year-old Ramos is in position to contend for a second straight victory.

“I feel a little bit experienced now, being in contention in these events,” said Ramos, who finished tied for second at the ADT Players Championship in Malaysia last month after losing in a three-man playoff. “I’m just more excited and happy to be continuing.”

Que, meanwhile, sits seven shots off the pace despite a 69, but the three-time Asian Tour winner and reigning Order of Merit champion on the local PGT remains hopeful.

“As long as you are out there playing, anything can happen,” said the 47-year-old Que.

Second-round leader Franco Scorzato, who fired a 66 on Thursday, slipped with a 71 to fall three shots behind the leader. Englishman Thomas Plumb, however, bounced back from a second-round 74 with an eagle-spiked, bogey-free 66 to move within two strokes of the lead.

Ortolani, the Italian who regularly competes on the Professional Golf Tour of India and the Alps Tour, fired eight birdies in a 65 to stay in contention for a breakthrough ADT title.

Amateur Shin Suzuki faded from the title race after a second straight 72 and now sits 10 shots back, level with Rupert Zaragosa, who also carded a level-par round. Keanu Jahns and Clyde Mondilla are likewise on 212 totals after rounds of 68 and 69, respectively.

Bagalana ace lights up Day Two of Pro-Tee as Kamulindwa assumes lead

Published

David Kamulindwa played the best round on the second day of the MTN Pro-Tee at Entebbe Golf Club on Wednesday.

Kamulindwa fired seven birdies in the second round of a 5-under 66 at the par-71 course overlooking Lake Victoria.

Playing at his second home, Kamulindwa opened round two with a birdie, and that set the pace for the day. He went on to birdie holes 4, 9, 11, 13, 14, and 15, but scratched with a couple of bogeys on par-3 holes 6 and 16.

Vincent Byamukama maintained second place after playing a 1-under 70 and is one shot behind the leader.

Meanwhile, Day One leader Rodell Gaita struggled on the back nine en route to a one-over 72 to slip to third on the leaderboard. Gaita bogeyed par-4 holes 14 and 17 and registered a double bogey on par-3 hole 16.

Andrew Ssekibejja moved up nine places into fourth place after playing the second-best round of the day. The Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa golfer played a 3-under 68 and is tied for fourth place with Abraham Ainamani with a gross total of 142.

Day One leader Marvin Kibirige had a round to forget as he returned a 4-over 75 and slipped to sixth place.

Irene Nakalembe, who has played an identical 2-over 73 in the two rounds, is the only lady who made the cut.

Abbey Bagalana’s ace

The brightest moment of round two of the Pro-Tee was on par-3 hole 12. While Gaita and Deo Akope birdied the hole, Abbey Bagalana, with a Ping S55, hit an eye-catching hole-in-one, the seventh of his career.

“You don’t come to the course expecting a hole-in-one, but for as long as you’re playing and you do practice, things like that happen because you’re aiming for the hole. It was the right club, I was in the zone, and I made it,” Bagalana said.

Round 3 Draw

The Pro-Tee continues on Thursday with Round Three, as the players who made the cut continue to battle for a lion’s share of Shs. 15,000,000.

Que eyes breakthrough at Luisita as 46 Filipinos join ADT Open field

Published

on

LUISITA — A 46-strong local contingent will tee it up on Wednesday in the $100,000 (around P6 million) Bingo Plus Philippine ADT Open at the historic Luisita course here, with the most established ace in the field chasing a career-first win at the Robert Trent Jones-designed layout.

“Yes, I haven’t. That’s why I am motivated,” Angelo Que said, referring to a victory at the storied venue that has hosted several major international and local events, including multiple Philippine Opens. “It’s never too late to win one (here), although the course is playing much tougher from what I am used to.”

The 47-year-old Que, who joined the traditional Pro-Am on Tuesday, noted that the course “has gotten longer” after recent rains softened the fairways over the past few days, adding, “The greens are also slow (during the event) and that could be a problem if they decide to speed them up for the tournament.”

This marks the second major professional event hosted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines this year, following the President’s Cup at Wack Wack in January. A third is set with the Asian Tour’s International Series Philippine Open at Manila Southwoods later this year.

Que, who won the last Philippine Golf Tour stop at Caliraya in come-from-behind fashion last month, said that with a full field that also includes 82 international entries, the battle for the title is wide open. He also named Sean Ramos, a past ADT leg winner, and big-hitting Keanu Jahns as two other Filipinos to watch.

Clyde Mondilla, another former Philippine Open champion like Que, is also in the field, along with Fidel Concepcion, who broke through as a pro last year at Apo Golf in Davao—a layout that shares striking similarities with Luisita.

A lean but talented amateur field will also see action. Shinichi Suzuki, a multiple-time Philippine team member playing out of Manila Southwoods, leads a six-man amateur group that includes Rolando Bregente and Chris Remata.

This will be the sixth of 13 stops on the ADT season, which will also stage tournaments in Thailand, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.

The highest-ranked Filipino in the ADT Order of Merit entering Luisita at No. 10, Ramos comes off a three-man playoff loss in the ADT Players Championship in Malaysia last month and will be eager to bounce back on home soil.
