President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has revealed that sweeping changes are on the way as the governing body moves to strengthen its statutes and enforce stricter regulations across African football competitions.

Speaking during an official visit to Rabat, Morocco, where he met with Fawzi Lekjaâ, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Motsepe emphasized that CAF is determined to raise standards and protect the integrity of the game.

“We are working on improving our regulations,” he said, signaling a clear intent to tighten governance.

The move comes at a time when CAF has faced scrutiny over disciplinary decisions and governance issues, with several high-profile cases, including ongoing disputes at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, placing the spotlight on the organization’s processes.

Motsepe made it clear that while CAF remains committed to respecting due process, it is also focused on ensuring that future cases are handled with greater clarity and firmness.

“We will enforce our rules,” he stressed.

A key part of the proposed reforms will be the introduction of tougher sanctions for violations, aimed at deterring misconduct and ensuring compliance across all competitions.

“Sanctions will be stricter,” he warned.

For Motsepe, the objective is not just punishment, but prevention, creating a system where rules are respected and upheld consistently.

He believes that stronger regulations will enhance the credibility of African football, both on the continent and globally.

“It’s about protecting our reputation,” he implied.

As CAF continues to push for reforms, the focus will be on implementation and impact.

For players, officials, and fans, the expectation is that these changes will lead to a more transparent and accountable system.

Because in football, integrity is everything.

And as Motsepe insists, CAF is determined to safeguard it.

The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has expressed strong confidence in Africa’s chances at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the continent will be represented by an unprecedented ten nations.

In a statement released on Wednesday, CAF reaffirmed its pride in the countries that have secured qualification for the global tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The 2026 edition marks a historic milestone for African football, as it will be the first time the continent fields ten teams at the World Cup, following the competition’s expansion to 48 nations.

Motsepe hailed the achievement as a testament to the rapid growth and rising global competitiveness of African football.

“CAF and African football are proud of the 10 countries that will be representing the African continent at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Motsepe said.

“It is the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup that Africa is represented by 10 countries. This is a recognition of the substantial growth and global competitiveness of African football.”

The CAF President added that expectations are high for the continent’s representatives, expressing belief that Africa could produce a World Cup winner in the near future.

“We are confident that the African national teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026 will make us proud and that an African nation will be champions of the FIFA World Cup.”

Motsepe also congratulated Democratic Republic of Congo for securing the final qualification spot after a decisive victory over Jamaica in the playoffs.

Africa’s increased representation comes on the back of consistent progress on the global stage, highlighted by Morocco’s historic semi-final finish at the 2022 tournament in Qatar—the best-ever performance by an African nation.

With ten teams set to compete, hopes are high that Africa can break new ground and potentially reach, or even surpass, the final at the 2026 global showpiece.

Motsepe Breaks Silence on 2026 WAFCON Host, Schedule

Published

on

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has confirmed that Morocco will remain the official host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), putting an end to speculation about a possible change of venue.

Motsepe made the clarification on Thursday, February 13, 2026, stressing that CAF is fully committed to its agreement with Morocco and that preparations for the tournament are progressing as planned.

His comments followed widespread rumours suggesting that Morocco had withdrawn from hosting duties, with South Africa reportedly being considered as a replacement.

According to CAF, the 2026 WAFCON will be staged from March 17 to April 3, 2026, in line with the original competition window. Motsepe emphasized that the dates cannot be altered, as the tournament also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“The WAFCON remains in Morocco. Nothing has changed,” Motsepe said.

“There has been interest from many countries, but some wanted a change in dates, which is not possible because this competition is part of the Women’s World Cup qualifiers.”

“The tournament must take place within that window, and it will take place.” Mosetpe insists.

The 2026 edition of the Women’s AFCON will be historic, marking the first time the competition features an expanded 16-team format, a move aligned with CAF’s broader strategy to grow and professionalise women’s football across Africa.

Matches are expected to be played across major Moroccan cities, including Rabat, Casablanca and Fès, with defending champions Nigeria set to compete alongside continental heavyweights such as South Africa, Zambia and Ghana.

CAF also clarified that the earlier uncertainty stemmed from remarks made by South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport in early February.

Those comments were later played down by South Africa’s Sports Minister, who stated that the country had only expressed readiness to assist if required, not to take over hosting rights.

With CAF’s latest confirmation, focus now shifts firmly to preparations on and off the pitch as Africa’s top women’s national teams gear up for a landmark WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
