Kent Pastrana leads UST’s 2-0 start in UAAP Women’s 3×3
University of Santo Tomas came out blazing in the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s 3×3 Basketball Tournament, opening its campaign with dominant wins over two contenders on Monday at Ayala Malls Manila Bay.
The Growling Tigresses, who finished third last season in the tournament supported by Wilson Philippines and Ayala Malls and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, routed defending champion Ateneo bannered by Kacey dela Rosa, 21-9, before closing the day with a 21-10 victory over Adamson led by Cheska Apag.
Kent Pastrana, a multiple-time UAAP Elite Team member, spearheaded UST’s attack, scoring 11 points against Ateneo before tallying eight points and 13 rebounds against Adamson.
“Sobrang happy ako kasi, especially, puro rookie ang kasama ko ngayon at ako lang ang senior,” said Pastrana. “Sobrang happy ako sa performance ng mga kasama ko at ipinakita nila na gusto nilang manalo at ibinigay nila yung best nila. Team effort pa rin talaga.”
Fil-Australian rookie Erinn Mcalary provided solid support, finishing with five points and five rebounds against the Blue Eagles before adding six points against the Lady Falcons.
Joining UST atop the standings with a 2-0 record is Far Eastern University, which escaped with a 15-14 win over the University of the Philippines before edging De La Salle University, 14-13.
Amyah Espanol led the Lady Tamaraws in both games with 10 points each.
The middle of the standings remains tight, with La Salle, UE, Adamson, and Ateneo all holding 1-1 records after Day 1.
Kyla Go scored 10 points in La Salle’s 21-12 win over UE to open its campaign. Apag fired eight points as Adamson stunned National University, 17-15. Dela Rosa anchored Ateneo with 10 points and eight rebounds in an 18-14 bounce-back win over NU, while Syril Onate drained the game-winner in UE’s 19-18 overtime upset of UP.
In the men’s division, defending champions Green Archers also got off to a strong start, pulling off a come-from-behind 21-16 win over the Soaring Falcons before dominating the Red Warriors, 21-11.
Balanced scoring fueled the Green Archers, with Jcee Macalalag leading the way with nine points and Doy Dungo adding six against Adamson, while Luis Pablo and Dungo chipped in six apiece against UE.
“Napakaimportante nitong start namin dahil ito yung magbo-boost ng confidence namin sa tournament na ‘to. Kami, parang wala kaming time para mag-relax. Kahit sino yung itapat sa amin, hindi namin sila u-underestimate para pagdating ng playoffs, ready kami kung sino ang makakalaban namin,” said reigning men’s MVP Doy Dungo.
Ateneo also surged to a 2-0 start after finishing last with just one win last year.
Shawn Tuano had eight points and six rebounds in Ateneo’s 21-13 win over FEU before Kyle Gamber knocked down the game-winning deuce in a 21-19 overtime victory over NU.
NU, UP, and FEU ended the day with 1-1 records.
Paul Francisco scored eight points in NU’s 16-9 rout of UST, while Miguel Yñiguez, Paolo Galotera, and LA Andres powered UP to a 21-19 win over UE. Kirby Mongcopa exploded for 14 points and nine rebounds in FEU’s 22-15 win over UST, dropping the Growling Tigers to 0-2.
Matt Edding capped the Falcons’ 15-14 victory to snap the Maroons’ momentum and enter the win column.
The collegiate division resumes Tuesday with eight games.

Luis Pablo, Amyah Espanol savor rise from UAAP to Gilas 3×3
While jumping between 3×3 and 5-on-5 basketball on a daily basis could be challenging, De La Salle University’s Luis Pablo and Far Eastern University’s Amyah Espanol could not be more grateful to be part of the Philippine delegation to the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
Pablo will team up with fellow Green Archer Doy Dungo, UST Growling Tiger Koji Buenaflor, and Biñan’s Nic Cabañero in the men’s 3×3 tournament, where the Philippines was grouped with Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Espanol is expected to join forces with Ateneo de Manila University’s Kacey Dela Rosa, University of the Philippines’ Kennan Ka, and FEU teammate Victoria Pasilang in the women’s division, where the Filipinas were pooled with Mongolia, Malaysia, and Macau.

“I’m really grateful that I get to play in the Asian Games coming up. It will be really nice to get some more 3×3 experience from the last Nations League. It will be good coming into the UAAP season, playing with all the great player,” said Espanol on Tuesday during the UAAP Season 89 press conference at the Novotel Manila.
“Syempre super grateful and blessed ako to be able to play for the national team and represent our country. Super grateful even though sabay siya sa UAAP I’m still excited and motivated to play,” echoed Pablo, the eighth-ranked men’s 3×3 player in the country.
For Pablo, answering the call of national duty is something he will never turn down.
He also represented the Philippines last August in the FIBA 3×3 Youth Nations League Asia SEA Conference, where the team placed second.

“La Salle was really happy and supportive that me and my teammate, my brother Doy will play for 3×3. Obviously, it’s a bit challenging balancing the trainings with La Salle and the national team but it’s also a challenge for us to balance yung school duties namin and national duties namin,” said Pablo.
“Sobrang grateful kami sa experience na ito so any given time na ibigay yung opportunity na ito, we will take it all the time.”
Meanwhile, Espanol continued to soak in the career growth she has experienced in just two years in the Philippines.
After moving to the Philippines to play for FEU in the UAAP just last year, the 13th-ranked women’s 3×3 player in the country has already become a vital piece of the national team’s three-a-side program.
Her late scoring burst in the Stop 6 final of the FIBA 3×3 Nations League Asia SEA Conference last August helped the Philippines secure a spot in the FIBA 3×3 Under-23 World Cup in Wuhan, China, this month.
“I never thought it would happen this quickly. I’m only 21, I’m only here for two years now. It was always my dream to play for the national team, that was the point in moving here, but I didn’t know it would happen so fast. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to show what I have so far,” said the Lady Tamaraw.

Gilas Women cling to slim lead, need big finish to secure U23 World Cup berth
Gilas Pilipinas Women face a must-win situation heading into the final stop of the 2026 FIBA 3×3 Nations League-Asia SEA Conference.
The Philippines failed to reach the Stop 5 finals after splitting its two games in the group phase—a 17-6 win over Vietnam and a 16-11 loss to New Zealand—on Saturday at Hextar World, Empire City in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
Heading into the final stop, Gilas Women hold a slim 410-400 lead over Stop 5 champion Chinese Taipei, while New Zealand sits third with 380 points.
Only one slot for the FIBA 3×3 Under-23 World Cup is at stake in the conference.
Against Vietnam, Kennan Ka and Amyah Espanol led the way with seven and six points, respectively.
New Zealand, however, imposed its physicality on the Filipinas in the second matchup, breaking a 5-5 deadlock to take an 11-6 lead, with Maia Jones scoring four points during the run.
Although Jam Meniano knocked down two deuces to cut the deficit to 12-10, New Zealand came up with key defensive stops before Madeline Morrow sank a deuce, followed by back-to-back baskets from Jones to seal the win.
Maya Taingahue has been ruled out for the final stop, leaving New Zealand with only three healthy players heading into Stop 6.
Meniano scored six points against New Zealand, while Jones and Morrow finished with eight and six, respectively.
For Stop 6, the Philippines is grouped with Thailand and New Zealand in the pool phase.
Meanwhile, New Zealand clinched the men’s division after winning its fourth stop, moving to the top of the conference standings with 480 points—100 ahead of the Philippines and 110 clear of Malaysia.
The quartet of Luis Pablo, Doy Dungo, Shawn Tuano, and Andrew Bongo defeated Thailand, 21-15, to open the day before falling to Chinese Taipei, 21-16.
