Alex Eala falls to qualifier Oliynykova in Strasbourg opener
It was a battle between Alexandra and Oleksandra.
This time, the one with the “O” got the win.
Alex Eala found herself dragged into a long, grueling battle and eventually ran out of gas, falling 6-3, 5-7, 3-6 to Ukrainian qualifier Oleksandra Oliynykova in the opening round of the 2026 Internationaux de Strasbourg in France on Monday.
The 25-year-old Oliynykova, ranked No. 68 in the world, came into the match riding a wave of momentum after defeating former world No. 20 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in the final round of qualifying. She was also coming off a career-best third-round appearance at the WTA 1000 Italian Open.
That confidence was evident from the start as she went toe-to-toe with world No. 38 Eala. Early on, the difference was Eala’s ability to capitalize on break points while Oliynykova struggled to convert hers.
The opening set remained on serve through the first six games before the seventh turned into the most dramatic stretch of the set.
Eala saved five break points and finally held serve after seven deuces to maintain control. The momentum carried into the next game as the Filipina secured the first break of the match.
Eala then closed out the opener, 6-3, in the ninth game after 57 minutes.
Oliynykova’s looping groundstrokes, complemented by slices and drop shots, continued to trouble Eala in the second set.
The Ukrainian raced to a 4-0 lead and appeared headed for a comfortable push to a deciding set.
But Eala fought back and eventually leveled the score at 5-5. The Filipina ace, however, failed to win another game as Oliynykova captured the final two games of the set to force a decider.
Oliynykova carried that momentum into the third set, where she showed superior composure and stamina. Leading 2-1, the Ukrainian squandered six break points, allowing Eala to tie the set at 2-2. Eala then broke serve in the fifth game to regain the lead at 3-2.
But Oliynykova refused to let the match slip away. She immediately answered with a break of her own in the sixth game and went on to blank Eala for the rest of the match, completing the comeback victory after two hours and 54 minutes.
It was a disappointing defeat for Eala, who had just come off a solid campaign at the Italian Open last week, where she reached the third round and pushed world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in a competitive encounter.
The Filipina will now look to regroup ahead of the French Open, which begins on May 25.

Alex Eala dominates Hon in near-flawless opener at Birmingham Open
Alex Eala lived up to her billing as the top seed at the Lexus Birmingham Open, delivering a commanding win in a match where she played near-flawless tennis.
The 21-year-old Eala was in complete control from start to finish, dispatching Australia’s Priscilla Hon, 6-0, 6-2, in the opening round of the WTA 125 event at the Edgbaston Priory Club’s Center Court in England on Tuesday.
The world No. 37 Filipina was not only aiming to open her grass-court singles campaign on a strong note but also to rebound from a tough loss in the doubles competition. Eala and Czech partner Nikola Bartůňková held match point but failed to convert, bowing to second seeds Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden of Great Britain, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9, on Monday.
Hon, however, found herself overwhelmed by Eala’s relentless pace.
Eala set the tone early in the opening set, winning 100% of her first-serve points and 75% of her second-serve points, never allowing the former world No. 94 to settle into rhythm. She cruised through the set in just 22 minutes, blanking Hon completely.
There was no let-up in the second set as Eala maintained her intensity. The top seed surged to a 5-0 lead, putting herself on the verge of a double bagel. Hon managed to salvage some pride by breaking Eala in the sixth game and holding serve in the seventh to get on the board, but Eala quickly shut the door in the eighth game to complete the win in 59 minutes.
Eala dominated the match statistically as well, outscoring Hon 53 points to 27.
With the victory, Eala improves her head-to-head record against Hon to 2-1. The two first met at an ITF event in Great Britain in 2023, where Eala won in straight sets, while Hon took their second meeting in the qualifiers of the 2024 WTA Ningbo Open in China.
Eala now awaits the winner of the clash between last year’s runner-up Greet Minnen of Belgium and Alina Charaeva of Russia.

Christopher Papa dethrones AJ Lim, captures Palawan Open crown
The Palawan Open 2026 concluded with a breathtaking display of grit and glamour at a packed, roaring Rizal Memorial Tennis Center on Sunday.
Capturing the essence of elite drama, fourth-ranked Fil-Am ace Christopher Papa and 18-year-old sensation Tennielle Madis both completed spectacular two-title sweeps, cementing their status as the undisputed rulers of the P2 million tournament.
Papa capped off a week of high-octane tennis by dethroning the country’s premier player, AJ Lim., in a 6-4, 6-4 straight-sets masterclass. While the scoreline suggested a routine victory, the match was a pressure cooker of suspense, with Papa breaking the crowd favorite Lim exactly once in each set.
On the women’s side, Madis reasserted her mastery over Marian Capadocia, securing a 6-2, 7-6 victory in a match that played out like a psychological thriller. The P100,000 triumph marked Madis’ second consecutive win over Capadocia, coming just weeks after she defeated her in the semifinal round on her way to the Philta National Open title.
Papa’s path to the finals of the event, sponsored by the Palawan Group of Companies and sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) and the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR), was forged in fire. He booked his place in the championship match by staging a stirring comeback against top seed Digvijay Singh of India, surviving a grueling 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4) semifinal thriller.
Against Lim in the final, Papa broke a 15-all deadlock in the fifth game of the opening set to secure a crucial break. Showing ice-cold composure, he recovered from a 15-30 deficit in the sixth game and then held serve at love in the eighth. Facing a late 15-30 threat in the 10th game, Papa strung together three consecutive points to clinch the opening set.
The second set remained on a knife’s edge until the ninth game. Down 0-15, Papa unleashed four straight points to break Lim for a 5-4 lead. Serving for the title, he was pushed to deuce but responded with back-to-back winners to secure the P300,000 singles prize in the tournament presented by the Philippine Sports Commission, Gentry Timepieces, and Bagong Pilipinas.
The singles triumph came less than 24 hours after Papa partnered with doubles specialist Casey Alcantara to thwart Jed Olivarez and Nilo Ledama for the men’s doubles crown on Saturday.
Riding the momentum of a near-flawless 6-0, 6-1 semifinal demolition of Kaye-Ann Emana, Madis survived an early exchange of breaks against Capadocia. She held serve in the fifth game, broke in the sixth, and fended off a grueling battle in the eighth to take the first set, 6-2.
The second set was pure theater. Madis surrendered a 3-1 lead and fell behind 3-4 before rallying to reclaim a 5-4 advantage, only for the resilient Capadocia to break back in the 11th game and go up 6-5.
With the match slipping away, Madis regrouped to force a tiebreak. Standing on the brink of a deciding set, the teenager relied on her relentless baseline game, sharp returns, and composure under pressure, unleashing clutch winners to close out the match in style.
Matching Papa’s heroics, Madis also claimed the women’s doubles crown earlier in the tournament, partnering with Stefi Aludo to dismantle sisters Kaye-Ann and Mica Emana, 6-0, 6-2.

POC to comply with FIVB decision suspending PNVF
The Philippine Olympic Committee General Assembly is expected to officially suspend the Philippine National Volleyball Federation during its General Assembly in June.
This after the International Volleyball Federation, or FIVB, suspended the PNVF on Friday, just hours after the Philippine Sports Commission withheld all funding for the national sports association.
The POC, according to its president Bambol Tolentino, received the FIVB email suspending the PNVF, which was also debunked by the Asian Volleyball Confederation for its withdrawal of support for AVC president Tats Suzara, the federation’s former president.
Tolentino said that the POC suspension of the PNVF is reflexive because the POC recognizes national federations that are recognized or aren’t in conflict with their international federations.
“The POC will abide by the decision of the IF,” Tolentino said. “It’s their internal rules, but the POC will always be for the welfare of the athletes, their developmental program and the Olympic movement.”
The FIVB suspended the PNVF headed by Tony Boy Liao “with immediate effect,” saying the “decision follows serious governance concerns and multiple purported violations of the FIVB Code of Ethics which are currently under investigation by the independent FIVB Ethics Panel.”
The FIVB created an Ad Hoc Committee to “ensure stability and proper governance during this suspension” and to “temporarily oversee the affairs of the PNVF in accordance with the FIVB General Regulations.”
The committee is composed of five FIVB officials with sensitive responsibilities, except for Alexa Dabao, the FIVB’s Legal Contractor in the Philippines.
Tolentino said he will seek clarification from the FIVB on the context of the Ad Hoc Committee’s takeover of the PNVF’s responsibilities.
“We will clarify who will take over the PNVF’s domestic affairs,” Tolentino said.
Once officially suspended, the PSC will follow suit in striking all support for the PNVF.
The POC has taken a “caretaker” role over various national sports associations, which had issues with their IFs, among them the tennis and billiards national federations.
Tolentino expressed immediate concern over the women’s national team, which will see action in the Asian Volleyball Confederation Women’s Volleyball Cup that starts this Saturday (June 6) in Candon City.
