‘Madugu Must Speak Up!’ — Ex-Super Falcons Coach Edwin Okon Breaks Silence On Nigeria’s WAFCON Preparations
Former Super Falcons head coach Edwin Okon has urged current national team boss Justin Madugu not to remain silent if Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) fall below the standard required to compete for the title.

With the Super Falcons aiming to reclaim the African crown in Morocco, concerns have been raised in some quarters over the team’s build-up to the tournament. While expressing confidence in the players’ ability to deliver, Okon insisted that a head coach has a duty to speak openly whenever conditions are not ideal.
Drawing from his own experience in charge of the nine-time African champions, the former coach said he never hesitated to challenge the authorities whenever issues threatened the team’s chances of success.
“When I was the head coach of the Super Falcons, I always spoke up whenever things were not right. A coach must be able to tell the authorities what the team needs because that is part of the job,” Okon said.
The experienced tactician stressed that keeping quiet in difficult situations does not help the team, especially ahead of a major competition where every aspect of preparation can influence performance.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about the Super Falcons’ readiness for WAFCON, with fans and former players closely monitoring the team’s build-up to the tournament.
Despite his concerns, Okon made it clear that his remarks should not be seen as criticism of Madugu, but rather as advice from someone who understands the pressures of managing Nigeria’s most successful national team.
“The coach should speak up whenever things are not going well. If there are issues with preparation, they should be addressed early because everyone wants the Super Falcons to succeed,” he added.
Nigeria heads to Morocco chasing a record-extending 11th WAFCON title, but the competition is expected to be fiercer than ever, with South Africa, Morocco, Zambia and other emerging powers continuing to close the gap on the continent.
Madugu has repeatedly maintained that his focus remains on preparing the team to compete at the highest level, while the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) have also moved to address players’ welfare by settling allowances and match bonuses before the tournament.
For Okon, however, financial support alone is not enough. Clear communication between the coaching crew and football authorities, he believes, will be just as important if Nigeria is to overcome the growing challenge from its African rivals and return home as champions.

Team Nigeria has recorded its first victory at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, defeating the Cayman Islands 21–17 in an entertaining Men’s 3×3 Basketball Pool A encounter on Friday morning.
The victory came after Team Nigeria had earlier opened its campaign in the swimming events, with Clinton Opute competing in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley. Opute finished sixth in Heat 1 against a quality field led by England’s Thomas Dean, officially marking Nigeria’s first appearance in the pool at Glasgow 2026.
On the basketball court, however, the Green and White quickly found their rhythm.
Displaying pace, discipline and composure, the Nigerian side produced a confident performance to overcome a determined Cayman Islands team and secure an important opening victory in Pool A.
The result gives Team Nigeria an early advantage in the group standings and provides the perfect start as the country’s athletes continue their quest for medals at the Games.
Sports247, reporting from Glasgow, observed jubilant celebrations from the Nigerian camp after the final buzzer as players embraced one another while officials applauded a performance that reflected the team’s determination and fighting spirit.
Also present courtside to cheer on the team was the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who celebrated the victory with the players and officials immediately after the game.
An excited Olopade congratulated the team on the impressive start to Nigeria’s campaign and urged them to remain focused as the competition progresses.
“This is the kind of start we were hoping for. Congratulations to the team for their fighting spirit and determination. Enjoy this victory, but stay focused because the journey has only just begun. Nigeria believes in you, and we are confident you can achieve even greater success at these Games,” he said.
His presence at the venue underscored the National Sports Commission’s commitment to providing unwavering support for Team Nigeria throughout the Commonwealth Games, with senior officials standing firmly behind the athletes as they pursue the country’s ambitious medal target.
The opening-day success is expected to provide a significant confidence boost ahead of more action involving Nigerian athletes later on Friday in Boxing and Para Powerlifting, where some of the country’s strongest medal prospects will be in action.
Nigeria is represented in Glasgow by 74 athletes competing across 10 sports, with the National Sports Commission targeting 16 to 20 gold medals.
Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in 1950, Team Nigeria has established itself as one of the competition’s most successful nations, winning 271 medals—including 82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze.

Adebodunrin Thomas Determined To Achieve Landmark Performance At Commonwealth Fencing Championship In Lagos
Nigeria’s number one female épée fencer, Adebodunrin Thomas has disclosed that she is determined to achieve a landmark performance at this year’s Commonwealth Fencing Championship, which is scheduled to hold in Lagos from August 9th to 14th.
Sports247 reports that, while admitting it will be a tough and very challenging competition, the fast-rising fencer, who was one of Nigeria’s representatives at the 2025 African Fencing Championships, is banking on her preparation towards the upcoming competition to uplift her.
As she gets ready to compete against top fencers from Australia, India, Bangladesh, Botswana, Cyprus, England, Ghana, Guernsey and Jamaica, Thomas reasoned further that the tips she has received from her coach will help her make an impact, along with her personal ambition.
Other competitors will come from Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Gambia, Togo and Wales, with India set to present the largest delegation of 67 fencers at the championship, which will involve contests in veteran, senior, under-23 and para categories.
Classifications that will feature during the six-day schedule of events are epee, foil, and sabre, all of which Thomas noted will make the upcoming competition more demanding than previous championships but said she remains optimistic about her chances of reaching an advance stage.
Thomas retorted: “I have very high expectations, and I think it is going to be really challenging. This will not be like the African Championships. I hope to reach the last 16 again, as I did at the Junior African Championships.
“More importantly, fencing against some of the world’s top athletes is a great opportunity. I have trained every day since returning from school, working with my coach on new techniques, and I am eager to put them into practice.”
