Hosts Morocco are on the verge of securing a place into the knockout stage of this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating rivals Algeria 1-0 on Thursday.

Sanaa Mssoudy struck the solitary goal of the game to lead the Atlas Lionesses to victory in the Maghreb derby.

The two teams arrived into this fixture on the back of wins in their opening games, with Morocco having defeated Kenya 4-0 while Algeria had got better of Senegal with a 2-0 victory.

The result means Morocco move to six points with one game to play (against Senegal) and need just a point to qualify to the quarterfinals but also top the group.

On the other hand Algeria will face Kenya in their final group game, needing maximum points to guarantee their chances.

With Senegal edging Kenya 1-0, the Harambee Starlets are out of the race to reach the quarterfinals. Senegal on the other hand will contend for the second spot in the group but must defeat Morocco.

• APR FC 2-1 Vipers SC

Vipers fell to APR in a tough 2-1 loss in the CECAFA Kagame Cup at Amahoro Stadium, Kigali on Thursday evening.

Vipers made changes that destabilised their rhythm thus turning out to be vulnerable in the hands of the hosts who also had the backing of the home crowd.

Vipers nearly broke the deadlock in the 10th minute but Torach’s effort deflected out for a corner kick.

Five minutes later, defender Bady Kevin made a strong sliding tackle to block Outtara Djbril who had his sight on goal.

Mamadou Traore broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. Vipers’ goalkeeper Denis Kigundu’s pass fell to APR and the home side punished the Venoms.

From that point, Vipers were so shaky failing to put together five passes but rather rushing play.

On the other hand, APR had a chance to double their lead but Dao Memel skied Gilbert Byiringiro’s delivery after beating Vipers’ backline.

Gusto Mulongo levelled matters in the 38th minute with a low powerful effort after being set up by Joel Sserunjogi.

Mulongo nearly doubled Vipers’ lead at the stroke of the first half but the Congolese forward’s attempt slightly above the frame.

At the start of the second half, Denis Lavagne made a double change introducing Nicholas Mwere and Ashraf Mandela for Patrick Mbowa and Derrick Ndahiro.

On top of the hour mark, Outtara restored the hosts’ lead after a diving header at the near post. Vipers’ backline were caught napping and the skipper smartly punished them.

With ten minutes to play, Vipers were reduced to 10 men after defender Bady was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

The loss leaves Vipers in the second position in Group A of the ongoing regional tournament.

Elsewhere, Gor Mahia registered a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Garde Républicaine thus finishing on top of Group A.

Uganda Premier League champions face Rwanda’s APR desperate to avoid defeat and seal top position in Group A of the ongoing CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali.

The Venoms lead the standings with maximum points after two matches following victories over Garde Republic (3-0) and Gor Mahia (1-0).

Following closely is Gor Mahia and APR on three points and with the Kenyan giants facing the group’s whipping boys from Djibouti, Vipers understand that avoiding defeat against the Rwandan champions gives them an unassailable lead and will grant them a place in the last four of the tournament.

Coach Denis Lavagne expects a difficult encounter against a desperate APR side who must win to remain with any hope of progress.

“It’s going to be a difficult game because our opponents need to win and also score many goals to have a chance of progressing to the semifinals. But for us, we are ready,” said the French man who is expected to ring a few changes to the team.

Vipers are yet to concede a goal and Lavagne has praised team work as the sole reason behind their clean sheets.

“We are well organised in defence and the entire team does a very good job defending. But individually, we also have good defenders and the team is compact.”

Meanwhile, the Venoms, looking to emulate former tournament winners from Uganda will rely on the experienced Farouk Miya, Karim Watambala, Gusto Mulongo and Milton Karisa as well as Yunus Sentamu for goals.

APR have former SC Villa duo of Ronald Ssekiganda and Hakim Kiwanuka in their ranks and will be desperate to prove a point against their compatriots.
