Villa host Kitara in repeat of Uganda Cup final on match round one

Saturday August 29, 2026
- Mutesa II stadium, Wankulukuku 4pm
All eyes will be on 17-time champions SC Villa as they lock horns with Stanbic Uganda Cup winners Kitara at Mutesa II stadium, Wankulukuku.
The fixture is a repeat of last season’s Uganda Cup final which the Royals edged 2-1 at Fufa Technical Centre, Njeru in May and they also recently met in the Fufa Super 8 with Villa edging a penalty contest after a goalless draw.
Back in 2023, this was the league’s opening fixture and Kitara won it injury time with a goal from Kabon Living who has since returned to the side.
Despite having average pre-season performances, Wasswa Bbosa says lessons have been learnt and implementation is on.
“The results or performances in the pre-season won’t matter here,” said Bbosa. “We used the pre-season to correct our errors and expect a different side when we start off the league,” he added.
The hosts have injury concerns with former Kitara midfielder Najib Yiga and vice-captain Aslam Ssemakula ruled out.
Kitara have no reported no absentees and will have former Villa players Meddie Kibirige, Nicholas Kasozi, Emmanuel Wasswa, Isa Lumu, George Ssenkaaba and Martin Kizza in line to face former pay masters.
Kabon Living, Patrick Kaddu and Jimmy Kalema will be key for the Royals who are using the same match as a trial ahead of their Caf Confederation Cup match against Mogadishu City.
For Zeljko Kovacevic, all eyes will be on Frank Ssebuufu, Simon Ssemayange and star man Patrick Kakande for inspiration.
Key Stat:

NEC FC boost defence with experienced Mustafa Mujuzi

Uganda Premier League side NEC FC has continued to lay down a marker ahead of the 2026/27 season after sealing the signature of experienced defender Mustafa Mujuzi on a three-year deal.
The commanding centre-back, who has committed to the Bugolobi-based outfit until the end of the 2028/29 campaign, is no stranger to the Diehards’ setup.
Mujuzi was not a mainstay figure during NEC’s impressive run to a runner-up finish in the recently concluded FUFA Super 8 tournament but the upcoming league gives him a chance to get a position in the team.

Known for his strength, aerial prowess, and exceptional game-reading skills, the energetic defender brings a wealth of top-flight experience to the NEC backline.
His extensive career includes notable spells with KCCA FC, Proline FC, Kyetume FC, Synergy FC, Vision FC, and Entebbe UPPC FC.
Mujuzi becomes the fourth major arrival at the club in the current transfer window, joining fellow recruits Enrique Lubwama, Enock Tumwesigye, and forward Fahad Bayo as NEC builds a formidable squad for the upcoming campaign.
NEC FC officials are confident that Mujuzi’s leadership and tactical discipline will add vital depth and stability to an already tight defensive unit as they chase domestic glory this season and beyond.
NEC will kick start on Saturday, August 29 as they take on KCCA in the Lugogo derby at Phillip Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

Defending champions Vipers kick off season with Entebbe UPPC clash

Friday August 28, 2026
- St. Mary’s stadium, Kitende 8pm [Live on Sanyuka Prime TV]
In what seems like no time at all, the StarTimes Premier League begins again on Friday evening, as reigning champions Vipers take on neighbours Entebbe UPPC at St. Mary’s stadium, Kitende.
Abdallah Mubiru worked wonders at the Printers as he led them to 5th position on their return to the premiership but they couldn’t have asked for a tougher opening fixture to begin their 2026/27 campaign.
The two league meetings last season ended with the Venoms winning both encounters; 1-0 at Bugonga and 2-0 at Kitende.
In fact, Entebbe UPPC (formerly Gaddafi) have only registered one victory in head-to-head meetings with the Venoms winning six and drawing once.
Vipers new head coach Denis Lavagne has highlighted the importance of a good start and says his team is now ready after seven weeks of pre-season training.
“I think the time is now right to start the league after seven good weeks of preparations,” said Lavagne. “We have had a good week after winning the Super Cup and we want to build on that, start with a win as we aim to defend the title,” he added.
The eight-time champions were dominant against Kitara in the 3-1 win last week and will be favourites heading into the clash against the Printers who are without six key players.
Isa Bugembe and Ambrose Kigozi have fitness issues after missing large parts of the pre-season and join Anwar Ntege, Grant Matsiko, Ahmed Amayo and Julius Poloto who are injured.
In their absence, the visitors will look to new signings Ibrahim Mugulusi, Kokolo and Sharif Ssengendo to drive the team forward.
On the other hand, Vipers will look to Farouk Miya, Gusto Mulongo and Karim Watambala to inspire them to maximum points.
The fixture will also act as a precursor to Vipers’ Caf Champions League preliminary round clash against Mauritania’s Nouadhibou next week.
The opening weekend of the premier league will continue through Saturday and Sunday.
