Middle East bombings may force Super Eagles to play in Europe

Published

Due to the heavy bombings in the Middle East, a proposed invitational tournament involving the Super Eagles may now be moved to Europe, officials said.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to feature in a tournament in Jordan later this month that would also involve fellow 2026 World Cup qualifiers Iran.

The Super Eagles will face Iran on March 27 in Amman and four days later take on hosts Jordan in a tournament to prepare both nations for the forthcoming World Cup.

However, the on-going attack by the USA and Israel on Iran has raised serious concerns over this tournament.

Organisers are now mulling the idea of the Super Eagles facing Jordan in Europe during that international break, while another option would be for the entire tournament itself to be moved to Europe.

It is now expected that a clearer solution would be found leading up to the March friendlies.

Francis Uzoho will start in goal for the Super Eagles in tomorrow’s friendly against 2026 World Cup-bound Jordan.

SCORENigeria has learnt the Cyprus-based shot stopper has been picked ahead of Adebayo Adeleye to replace Maduka Okoye, who suffered a thigh injury in training.

Uzoho was Nigeria’s No 1 goalkeeper at 2018 World Cup in Russia, but lost his place in the team after arch-rivals Ghana qualified for the 2022 World Cup at the expense of the Super Eagles.

The 27-year-old Uzoho, who made his Super Eagles debut in 2017, was in goal in a group game against Uganda at the recent AFCON in Morocco, which Nigeria won 3-1.

Udinese No 1 goalkeeper Maduka Okoye will miss tomorrow’s Super Eagles friendly against Jordan after he suffered a thigh injury in training.

Okoye was in goal in the first friendly against Iran, which the Super Eagles won 2-1.

He will now be replaced by either the experienced Francis Uzoho or Adebayo Adeleye.

Coach Eric Chelle will be forced to make changes to his starting XI against Jordan as he will now be without three players who started against Iran – Okoye, Semi Ajayi and Bruno Onyemaechi.

Onyemaechi was given compassionate leave to be with his partner as she gave birth to their first child, while Ajayi was also excused to attend to a personal matter.
