Enyimba chairman Kanu Nwankwo has urged supporters to continue backing the club as the nine-time Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions search for their first points of the 2026/27 season.

Kanu calls for patience as Enyimba search for maiden points

Kanu’s appeal came after Enyimba suffered a third consecutive defeat on Sunday, losing 1-0 at home to Inter Lagos.

Ezekiel Moses scored the only goal of the match in the 18th minute as Inter Lagos secured their first-ever top-flight victory. The result left Enyimba as the only team yet to pick up a point after three matches. 

In a message to supporters, Kanu acknowledged the club’s difficult start while calling for continued backing as the team seeks to reverse its fortunes.

“Hard times are not forever, they come and go,” Kanu wrote, quoting a line from a jingle by the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State.

The former Super Eagles captain also acknowledged the supporters who turned up despite the club’s difficult run.

“The times have not been most favourable. We understand the weight of the disappointing losses and we are determined to make things right,” he said.

Kanu thanked the supporters for remaining behind the team during the defeat to Inter Lagos.

“In the rain, you came out to support us against Inter Lagos. Though it did not go our way, you supported us till the final minute and we do not take that support for granted.”

With Enyimba still searching for their first point of the campaign, Kanu urged supporters to remain committed to the team.

“We implore you to stand with us as we wriggle our way out of this labyrinth,” he said.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns around the club following their poor start to the season.

The difficult run has also been accompanied by off-field developments. The PUNCH reported that Enyimba sporting director Daniel Eke arrived at Monday’s training session with police officers, with some officials reportedly taken away following the team’s defeat to Inter Lagos. (Punch Newspapers⁠)

The club has not publicly addressed all the claims surrounding the incident

Enyimba will return to action on Wednesday when they host Sporting Lagos in Aba.

The NPFL has scheduled the Matchday 5 fixture for 4pm on 23 September. 

Kanu described the fixture as an opportunity for the club to begin changing the direction of its campaign.

“Next for us is a home game against Sporting Lagos on Wednesday as we seek our first win of the season. A win can be a propeller,” he wrote.

Sporting Lagos will also be looking to respond after suffering a 2-0 home defeat to Abia Warriors on Sunday. 

Eyimba look to revive winning culture

Kanu believes Enyimba’s history and winning mentality can help drive the team’s response.

“We are used to victories and we are proud of that culture. Come, cheer us to victory as we kick off a resurgence. We will get it right,” he said.

Enyimba have won the Nigerian league title nine times and remain one of the country’s most successful clubs.

However, their immediate task is to secure their first points of the season when they face Sporting Lagos on Wednesday.

Kanu has called on the supporters to stay behind the team as Enyimba seek to end their difficult start and begin their campaign on a different note.

“Indeed, hard times are not forever, they come and go,” he concluded.

Inter Lagos secured a memorable 1-0 victory over Enyimba, handing the Aba giants their third consecutive defeat of the season and their first home loss of the campaign.

The visitors produced a disciplined performance to leave the Enyimba Stadium with all three points.

Ezekiel scored the decisive goal, sending the visitors into the lead and ultimately securing the win.

The match remained closely contested as both sides looked to gain control. Enyimba pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Inter Lagos remained organised and protected their lead.

Enyimba had opportunities to respond, particularly from set pieces. The home side won a free-kick on the edge of the box late in the game, but the effort was dealt with by the Inter Lagos defence.

Kennedy Boboye marked his 300th Nigeria Premier Football League game in the dugout with a victory as Bendel Insurance opened the new season with a win over Warri Wolves.

The milestone adds another notable achievement to Boboye’s long managerial career in Nigeria‘s top flight.

According to NPFL News, his 300 NPFL matches have produced 125 wins, 85 draws and 90 defeats.

Boboye has also won two NPFL titles during his managerial career.

He guided Plateau United to the league title in 2017 before leading Akwa United to another championship four years later in 2021.

The 300-game mark places Boboye among the most experienced coaches in the NPFL, having managed several clubs across different spells in the competition.

His latest chapter comes with Bendel Insurance, where he will aim to build on the club’s winning start to the season.

The Benin-based side will be hoping the early victory provides a platform for a strong campaign under the experienced coach.

For Boboye, the milestone brings together more than a decade of experience in the Nigerian top flight, including two league titles and 125 victories.

He celebrated his 300th NPFL appearance from the touchline in the best possible fashion, with another win.
