Giants Brought To Their Knees! Lagos Greenbacks Stun Two-Time Champions Abia Warriors 14–12 In Showtime Flag Football League Season XV Thriller

Published

on

The reputation of a two-time champion counted for little on Sunday, October 25, 2026, as Lagos Greenbacks pulled off a sensational 14–12 victory over Abia Warriors in Gameweek 5 of the Showtime Flag Football League Season XV at Showtime Arena, Meadow Hall, Lekki, Lagos.

In a contest packed with interceptions, missed opportunities and determined defending, the Greenbacks refused to be intimidated by opponents who had previously conquered Showtime Bowl XII and XIII.

The result was particularly striking considering the Warriors’ impressive early-season form. They had demolished Delta Braves 54–13 in Gameweek 3, while the Greenbacks were still rebuilding momentum after a difficult start to the campaign.

But on Sunday, the script changed.

Abia Warriors quarterback Joseph Williams initially threatened to take control, connecting with Jumai A.O. for gains of 24 and 25 yards. However, Greenbacks defenders repeatedly frustrated the Warriors near the end zone.

Williams eventually broke the deadlock with a touchdown pass to Bello Remilekun, giving Abia Warriors a 6–0 advantage.

The Greenbacks’ response came through the partnership of quarterback Oluremi Jedidiah and receiver Obiekezie Chiamaka.

Jedidiah first found Chiamaka for a 21-yard gain before connecting with the same player for a 21-yard touchdown. The Greenbacks moved ahead 7–6 and carried that slender advantage into halftime.

The second half was another tense struggle as both sides fought for control. Abia Warriors continued to challenge, but the Greenbacks held on to complete a dramatic 14–12 victory.

Chiamaka’s influence earned the receiver the Match MVP award, with 42 receiving yards, one receiving touchdown and 18 passing yards. The performance produced a 7.7 rating and 3.9 fantasy points, the highest fantasy return of the match.

Remilekun led the Warriors’ fantasy contributions with 3.2 points, while Jedidiah recorded 3.0 for Greenbacks.

Defensive interventions were equally important. Balogun Faisat Olajumoke intercepted Williams, while Fatungase Jabar A. and Confidence Nzurumike produced interceptions for the Warriors in a match where neither attack enjoyed complete freedom.

The victory adds to a growing Greenbacks resurgence. Earlier in the season, they recorded a commanding 53–0 win over Rivers Alphas, demonstrating their ability to dominate. Against Abia Warriors, they showed something different: the composure to survive a close battle against championship-calibre opposition.

For the Warriors, who entered Season XV hoping to reclaim the title they lost to Lagos Knights last season, the defeat is a reminder that the competition’s established hierarchy is under serious pressure.

For Lagos Greenbacks, this was more than a two-point victory. It was a warning to every title contender that no opponent can be taken lightly.

Grassroots Sports Summit: SSA Adeboye Eyes Stronger Nigeria–Morocco Partnership as November 18 Countdown Continues

Published

on

As preparations intensify for the National Grassroots Sports Development Summit scheduled for November 18–19, 2026, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has expressed optimism that Nigeria’s growing sporting relationship with Morocco will open new opportunities for grassroots athletes and strengthen international cooperation.

Adeboye, who recently visited the Moroccan Embassy in Abuja for discussions with the Moroccan Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Moha Ou Ali Tagma, said the engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to build strategic partnerships capable of transforming grassroots sports development in Nigeria.

The Presidential aide, who also travelled to Morocco during the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to support Nigeria’s Flamingos, described the North African country’s sporting environment as an important example of how sustained investment, infrastructure development and international collaboration can contribute to sporting excellence.

According to him, discussions surrounding potential cooperation between Nigeria and Morocco are encouraging, with high-ranking Moroccan sports officials, including the country’s sports minister and other key stakeholders, among those expected to feature in further engagements.

“Our recent meeting with the Moroccan Ambassador to Nigeria was very productive, and my visit to Morocco has further strengthened my belief in what we can achieve through international sporting partnerships. We are looking forward to engagements involving top Moroccan sports officials, including the sports minister, as we explore opportunities that will benefit young Nigerian athletes,” Adeboye stated.

He explained that the forthcoming summit, themed “Creating a New Pathway for Sustainable Grassroots Sports Development,” will provide a platform for translating such relationships into practical opportunities in talent identification, coaching exchanges, sports infrastructure, youth competitions and international exposure.

“We do not want international relationships that end with courtesy visits and photographs. Our focus is on partnerships that will create real opportunities for talented boys and girls across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas,” he added.

Adeboye emphasised that the summit, taking place at the Banquet Hall, State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja, will bring together government representatives, sports administrators, development partners, private-sector stakeholders and other key players to chart a sustainable pathway for grassroots sports.

He noted that the summit’s five pillars — Participation, Talent Development, Infrastructure, Sports Economy and International Pathways — reflect the administration’s determination to establish a more inclusive and economically viable sporting system.

“November 18 and 19 are important dates for the future of Nigerian sports. We are bringing stakeholders together not merely to discuss challenges, but to develop practical solutions and establish partnerships that can produce lasting results,” Adeboye said.

The SSA reaffirmed his commitment to advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of creating greater opportunities for Nigerian youths through sports, while urging stakeholders to support the summit and its objectives.

NNL: Fatai Akande Hails Crown FC’s Mentality After Comeback Draw Against Heartland

Published

Crown FC head coach Fatai Akande has praised his players’ mental strength and resilience after coming from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against Heartland FC in their 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season opener in Owerri.

Sports247 reports that the Heartland, managed by former Super Eagles international Emmanuel Amuneke, took a commanding 2-0 first-half lead through Ekene Osuigwe and Jonathan Osondu.

However, Crown FC responded strongly after the break, with goals from Osas Kelvin and Lekan Mustapha earning the visitors a valuable point at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

Speaking after the encounter, Akande described his team’s comeback as evidence of their strong mentality, acknowledging that recovering from a two-goal deficit was never an easy task.

“I think it was a good mental character from the boys. Coming down from two goals down is not easy,” Akande said.

The Crown FC tactician also acknowledged the quality of the opposition, recognising Amuneke’s experience as a former international and the tactical organisation of his Heartland side.

“We knew Heartland’s coach is an ex-international and has a pattern of play with a good side,” he added.

Reflecting on the contrasting performances in both halves, Akande admitted that his team struggled before the interval but improved significantly after the restart.

“We were caught unaware in the first half. We lost the first half and we won the second half,” he concluded.

The result gives Crown FC an encouraging start to the new NNL campaign, while Heartland will be disappointed not to have converted their first-half advantage into a winning start.

Halloween Fever Hits Showtime Flag Football League As Gameweek 6 Promises Revenge, Rivalries, Giant-Killing Drama And Prizes In Lagos

Published

Lagos is preparing for a Sunday unlike any other as the Showtime Flag Football League Season XV returns with five explosive Gameweek 6 encounters, a Halloween-themed celebration, a best-dressed competition and prizes for fans at Showtime Arena, Meadow Hall, Lekki, on November 1, 2026.

After a sensational Gameweek 5 that saw established champions humbled, historic rivalries rewritten and unexpected heroes emerge, the stage is set for another extraordinary afternoon of flag football and entertainment.

This time, the excitement will extend beyond the pitch.

Showtime has announced a special Halloween Sunday, inviting supporters to arrive in their most creative costumes and compete for a cash prize in the Best Dressed contest. Halloween-themed games at Showtime Socials and activities around the Fan Village will add to the festive atmosphere.

But while fans compete for prizes off the field, ten teams will be fighting for something equally valuable on it: victory, pride and momentum in the championship race.

Delta Panthers versus Rivers Alphas opens the programme with a confrontation between two teams desperate to escape their recent disappointments.

Panthers were demolished 52–0 by defending champions Lagos Knights in Gameweek 5, while Rivers Alphas suffered a 38–0 defeat against Gateway Horns.

Both sides have endured difficult outings, making their meeting an opportunity to change the narrative. For Delta Panthers quarterback Jite Ughojor, the challenge is to revive an attack that struggled against the Knights. Rivers Alphas must rediscover their confidence after another frustrating afternoon.

The second encounter brings Delta Braves against Gateway Horns, with the Horns looking to build on their impressive victory over Rivers Alphas.

Gateway quarterback Adebare Adejumo delivered an influential Gameweek 5 performance, while Nwokolo Prominence claimed MVP honours. The Braves will need a disciplined defensive display to contain a Horns attack that has rediscovered its scoring touch.

Then comes one of the afternoon’s most intriguing fixtures: Lagos Greenbacks versus Lagos Rebels.

The Greenbacks arrive with renewed confidence after stunning two-time champions Abia Warriors 14–12 in one of Gameweek 5’s biggest surprises.

Receiver Obiekezie Chiamaka, who earned MVP recognition against the Warriors, and quarterback Oluremi Jedidiah will be crucial figures as Greenbacks attempt to claim another major scalp.

However, the Rebels possess considerable attacking firepower. Quarterback Sulaimon Alhameen has already demonstrated his quality this season, while receiver Fawaz Azeez was recently recognised as Showtime’s Player of the Week.

With local pride at stake, the all-Lagos encounter promises intensity and drama.

Abia Warriors against Ibom Raptors offers another fascinating storyline.

Both teams suffered painful Gameweek 5 defeats. Warriors were shocked by Greenbacks, while the Raptors surrendered a 19–6 halftime advantage before losing 31–19 to Cross River Ikan Sports.

For the two-time champion Warriors, another defeat would raise uncomfortable questions about their championship ambitions.

For Raptors quarterback Taiwo Oluwalanu and receiver Mustapha Babatunde, the fixture offers an immediate opportunity to restore confidence.

Yet the most compelling storyline may be saved for the final contest.

Cross River Ikan Sports versus Lagos Knights pits a team celebrating a historic breakthrough against the reigning champions.

Ikan Sports made history in Gameweek 5 by defeating Ibom Raptors for the first time in their league rivalry. Mukaila Rasheedat earned MVP honours, while Umeh Chisom played an important role in the remarkable turnaround.

Now comes a considerably bigger examination.

Lagos Knights, inspired by quarterback Kayode Mafe and MVP performer Bowofoluwa Oyerinde, enter the encounter following their extraordinary 52–0 demolition of Delta Panthers.

The Knights are determined to protect the championship they won in Season XIV. Ikan Sports, meanwhile, have already demonstrated that reputations can be overturned.

Can the history-makers produce another shock, or will the champions remind everyone why they wear the crown?

Beyond the individual fixtures, Gameweek 6 represents another important chapter in Showtime’s mission to grow flag football in Nigeria.

The 2026/27 season features 18 regular-season gameweeks, additional 5v5 Co-ed Cup competitions and a championship journey scheduled to conclude in May 2027.

With flag football preparing for its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, the athletes competing in Lagos are helping bring greater visibility to a sport with growing international significance.

For families, sports enthusiasts, young athletes and anyone searching for a different Sunday experience in Lagos, Showtime is offering a combination of live competition, community activities, costumes and entertainment.

Gameweek 6 begins on Sunday, November 1, 2026, with the event advertised from 1:20pm at Showtime Arena, Meadow Hall, Lekki, Lagos.

Tickets are available through the league’s official website, with general admission, VIP and VIP+ options.

Come for the touchdowns. Stay for the atmosphere. Dress for Halloween. Cheer for your favourite team.

Because this Sunday, the biggest surprise might happen on the field — or in the crowd.
