Speaking on the sidelines of the marathon, Dikko highlighted the steady growth of the race and its increasing relevance on the global athletics calendar, noting that the organisation, logistics and athlete welfare reflected clear progress over the years.
“The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has continued to improve in quality and structure. What we are seeing today is the result of consistency, proper planning and strong collaboration with key stakeholders,” Dikko said.
He also used the occasion to speak on the renewed vision and early successes of the National Sports Commission, stressing that the commission is focused on building sustainable systems rather than short-term gains.
“The National Sports Commission is about reform, structure and long-term development. We are laying foundations that will support athletes, administrators and federations across all sports,” he explained.
“Our goal is to create an environment where Nigerian sports can thrive locally and compete globally.”
Dikko added that road races such as the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon align perfectly with the commission’s agenda of mass participation, talent discovery and sports-driven economic activity.
“Events like this go beyond competition. They promote fitness, tourism, youth engagement and national pride. This is the kind of model we want to replicate across the country,” he stated.
The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon continues to attract elite runners and recreational athletes from within and outside Nigeria, reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s leading road races and a key platform for advancing the nation’s sports development objectives.
