Sam Sodje Urges Nigeria to Fix Football Foundations Amid World Cup Uncertainty
Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has reiterated his controversial stance that Nigeria should focus on fixing deep-rooted structural issues in its football rather than hoping for World Cup qualification through administrative rulings.

Speaking as the football world awaits FIFA’s decision on Nigeria’s appeal involving DR Congo, Sodje said qualification achieved through the “back door” would only paper over long-standing problems.
“I know it may sound harsh, but I don’t think qualifying like this helps Nigerian football,” Sodje said. “It will only cover the cracks that need urgent fixing.”
The former Reading and Hull City defender stressed that governance, player development, planning and accountability must take priority over short-term success.
“We should be focusing on building the game properly, from grassroots to administration,” he added. “If we don’t fix the system, qualifying for a tournament won’t change anything in the long run.”
Sodje concluded by urging football authorities to use the current situation as a turning point.
“Sometimes you need to face reality and rebuild,” he said. “That’s the only way Nigerian football can truly move forward.”
