Devon Maes, KRC Genk Head of Health and Performance, saw Yira Sor flash past him in the closing stages of the KRC Genk – KAA Gent match at the weekend.
The Genk striker slotted home the third goal after running at 39 km/h. Optical tracking ultimately measured 37.7 km/h.
Maes was immediately impressed by Sor’s sprint after the Genk-Gent race.
“We knew Yira was very fast, but this was exceptional. The sprint also caught our attention immediately. Yira was fortunate that he could run very straight and didn’t encounter anyone to hinder him,” he told Sporza.
Genk Head of Health and Performance said Sor’s speed also has to do with his build.
“He has the perfect muscle composition to reach top speeds. With very strong and elastic tendons,” Maes said.
“In the past, there wasn’t really any training for that. But now, even youth academies specifically focus on it. They’re working on running technique, among other things. Although you can only achieve speeds like Sor’s if nature is kind to you.”
Will Genk allow Sor to feature in a 100 metres dash event?
“Are we going to let Yira run the 100 metres soon? (laughs) The demands of football are already high enough, so we’re not going to subject him to that,” Maes answered.
