With Kevin Quiambao leading the way, Goyang Sono clinched a historic playoff berth in the KBL.

The Skygunners currently sit fifth in the league with a 28-25 record, with just one game remaining — a remarkable nine-game improvement from last season. This marks the first time in franchise history that Goyang Sono has reached the postseason.

“I’m super happy and blessed na makareceive ng ganitong opportunity, especially for me na bago pa lang sa professional basketball,” Quiambao told Tiebreaker Times.

“It means a lot to me, pero a lot of work to be done pa.”

In his sophomore season, Quiambao is averaging 15.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

Nathan Knight leads the Skygunners in scoring with 18.0 points and 11.4 rebounds per contest, while Lee Junghyun is averaging 18.6 points and 5.2 assists per game.

If things stay on course, Goyang Sono is likely to face Ethan Alvano and Wonju DB in the quarterfinals.

But for Quiambao, making the playoffs is only the beginning.

“My goal, siyempre, is to win the championship, pero alam kong madaming pagdadaanan at pagsubok bago makuha ’yon,” he said.

“I just want to cherish this moment and focus on the present, one game at a time.”

CJ Perez is no stranger to being hounded by foul trouble, and that’s precisely why he managed to buck that trend to help San Miguel turn back Ginebra for their first win streak of the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday.

But the star guard himself won’t deny that it gets frustrating whenever he finds himself in such a tough situation–just like what happened against the Kings.

“Sabi ko nga kanina, pumunta ako rito para mag-basketball, hindi magpa-cute sa bench,” he offered shortly after their thrilling 85-82 victory witnessed by a good Easter crowd at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

“Nakaka-frustrate siya.”

A microwave offensively, Perez was held scoreless in the first half as he got called for a total of four personal fouls, the last of which was against RJ Abarrientos with 4:03 left in the second period that led to his benching.

But he didn’t stay on the sidelines for long, with Coach Leo Austria still opting to start his prized guard in the third quarter, which indeed paid dividends as the latter began buckling down to work to eventually join the scoring fray.

He’d go on to finish with 20 points, 15 of which he made in the final period alone as he made tough layups down the stretch to help the Beermen push the crowd darlings into a tight exchange after trailing by as many as 13 points.

Perez would also chalk up eight rebounds and three assists to his tally, with his last dime easily the most important of the night as it led to Don Trollano’s game-winning trifecta to break the 82-all deadlock with 8.3 seconds left to play.

“Nag-focus lang ako, stayed composed, nilaro ko lang ‘yung laro ko nung second half, and nagbunga naman. We’re grateful na nanalo kami,” said the 32-year-old of his personal bounce-back that earned plaudits from Austria.

The Gilas mainstay couldn’t be any happier to witness his patience pay off so sweetly, which was also a subtle display of learning from past experiences.

It could be recalled that the same thing happened to him back in Game 6 of the Season 50 Philippine Cup semis versus Ginebra as well last January 16, where he scored 30 in just the opening period and finished with a career-high 41.

They did win, and that’s what mattered, although Austria believed that Perez could have scored more than his final output had he not encountered foul trouble–Perez accumulated a total of five personal fouls in that series clincher.

Still, the Lyceum product didn’t take all the credit to himself, expressing gratitude to the kind of trust his mentor and the rest of San Miguel have in him.

“Sa trust ng coaches and teammates ko, alam nilang kaya kong bumawi anytime,” he said. “Actually, hindi lang naman ito ‘yung mga larong may ganun ako na foul trouble, pero ni-look forward ko lang talaga ‘yung second half.

“Nag-ano lang ako sa flow ng game. Ayun, naging worth it naman ‘yung pagiging patient ko nung second half.”

Don Trollano proved yet again how reliable he could be in the clutch after helping San Miguel pull off a great escape against Ginebra on Easter Sunday.

Starring in their own tale of resurrection, the seasoned winger nailed a booming trey from the corner with 8.3 seconds left to break the 82-all knot, and ultimately enable the Beermen to complete the comeback from as much as 15 down.

“Kumpiyansa lang, tsaka open kasi eh,” he reflected on his game-winning moment moments after their 85-82 victory at the SMART Araneta Coliseum–their second in a row in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup.

Trollano was understandably pumped up right after knocking down that big of a shot, although delivering down the stretch is actually no longer new to him.

Following another heroic act, fans and observers alike were reminded of his past exploits in dire situations, the most recent of which was during the Season 50 Philippine Cup elimination round against Magnolia last November 7.

There, the Adamson product sank a four to put themselves in the lead for good with 53.5 seconds left before walking away with the 94-92 decision.

It’s becoming clear that he’s being leaned on by Coach Leo Austria as one of the traditional powerhouses’ closers, although Trollano refused to concur.

“Hindi, hindi. Nagkataon lang ‘yung opportunity,” he said sheepishly.

“Medyo iniwan ako e, so wala na rin akong ibang gagawin kasi shot clock na rin eh.”

The 34-year-old even deflected the credit to teammate CJ Perez, who found him open on the corner and didn’t hesitate to dish it out to him for the win.

“Nakakataas ng kumpiyansa ‘pag ganun eh, pag nagtitiwala sa’yo ang teammate mo. CJ’s an unselfish player, nakita niya ‘kong open, pinasa niya sa akin,” he said.

“Nung nag-help sila kay CJ doon, nag-help si Troy, so naiwan akong open.”

But there should be no denying that Trollano is growing comfortable with such a role, given the kind of results he’s been making–much to SMB’s delight.

“Siguro,” said the 11-year pro.

“Akala ko nga papalitan ako kasi usually, si Marcio (Lassiter) ‘yung tumatapos e. Siguro, tiwala lang din si Coach Leo.”
