USSSA Games: Aidan College seek redemption in placement game against Buddo SS

Published

on

The stage is set for a high-stakes rematch as Aidan College prepares to face off against familiar foes, Buddo SS, in the 3rd place playoff.

For Aidan College, this isn’t just about a bronze medal, it’s about pride, persistence and breaking a persistent barrier.

Having met Buddo SS twice in the group stages across the 2025 and 2026 campaigns, Aidan College has yet to find a winning formula, falling short on both occasions.

However, Head Coach Umar Kabuye believes his side is no longer the underdog but a wounded lion ready to strike.

Aidan College has enjoyed a stellar campaign, but the shadow of Buddo SS looms large over their recent history. Despite the previous losses, Coach Kabuye insists those defeats served as the ultimate scouting report.

“We have met Buddo SS in the group stages twice in 2025 and 2026. Unfortunately, we have lost twice, but the most important thing is that we have picked up several lessons,” Kabuye noted. “I think we are a wounded side and also want to taste victory against Buddo.”

The narrative heading into this encounter is centred on psychological resilience. The Aidan technical bench has been working overtime to ensure the players enter the pitch with the belief that Buddo is beatable.

For Aidan College, finishing fourth is not an option. The motivation within the camp is at an all-time high, with the players eager to prove that the gap between them and the giants of Buddo SS has finally closed.

“The players and the technical team badly want to end the poor run against Buddo and I’m confident that we are ready for the challenge,” Kabuye added.

“We know it’s going to be a challenging encounter, but it’s one we are ready for. Victory is the target so that we conclude the campaign on a high note.”

Five student athletes dead in highway crash

A dark cloud has settled over the Ugandan sports community following a horrific road accident on Tuesday that claimed the lives of five students from Iki-Iki Senior Secondary School.

The tragedy occurred along the Mbale–Tirinya Highway at Jami, located within the Kamonkoli Town Council, as reported earlier by Sports Nation.

The students were en route to the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) football games at Kamonkoli Seed Secondary School in Budaka District.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck transporting the team, a vehicle with registration number UAP 443Z, suddenly lost control and overturned.

Five young athletes died instantly at the scene. Several other students sustained various injuries and were rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, where they are currently undergoing emergency treatment.

Authorities have moved swiftly following the crash. The driver of the truck has been taken into custody and is expected to face a litany of charges, including reckless driving, overloading and operating a vehicle in poor condition

The Iki-Iki SS team had been showing promise in Group D of the tournament. Just before the accident, they had secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Grace Comprehensive School, followed by a hard-fought loss to Bugwere High School.

They were scheduled to play Iki-Iki High School and Ngoma Standard School later that afternoon.

This loss is particularly stinging as it comes just days after a separate tragedy claimed eight lives from the Red Devo Football Club, including the club’s CEO, following their Uganda Cup exit.
