Dolphins Swim Club Kampala set to host Junior Championships

The stage is set for one of Uganda’s most anticipated grassroots swimming events as Dolphins Swim Club Kampala prepares to host the Dolphins Junior Championships 2026 on April 18th and 19th at Kampala Parents School, Naguru.
The two-day competition promises to be a vibrant showcase of young swimming talent, bringing together hundreds of junior athletes from across the country.
This annual championship has steadily grown into one of the premier developmental galas on the Ugandan swimming calendar, with a strong focus on nurturing young swimmers and introducing them to competitive standards at an early age.
The Dolphins Junior Championships is specifically designed for young swimmers aged 11 years and below, making it a critical stepping stone in their athletic journey. According to Tonny Kasujja, the Head Coach of the Dolphins Swim Club Kampala, the event serves as an introduction to structured and competitive swimming, helping athletes understand rules, build confidence, and adapt to the pressures of competition.
Swimmers will compete across distinct age categories, including:
- 6–7 years
- 8–9 years
- 10–11 years
These categories ensure fair competition while allowing athletes to measure their progress against peers of similar age and ability.
Beyond medals and rankings, the championship emphasizes technical development and discipline. Young swimmers are expected to adhere to official swimming regulations, a crucial aspect of the sport that often leads to disqualifications when not properly followed.
This focus helps athletes to learn correct techniques early, understand competition rules and prepare for higher-level national and international events.

This year’s gala will feature primarily sprint events, including 25m and 50m races, which are ideal for developing speed and technique in younger swimmers. In addition, the event will include relay races, with a unique twist of mixed relays, where boys and girls compete together, promoting teamwork and inclusivity.
Performance recognition is a key highlight of the championships. Winners in each age category will receive medals, but the appreciation goes even further: the top three swimmers are awarded medals, rankings are extended to recognize up to six swimmers and an additional eight swimmers are acknowledged for their efforts.
The broad recognition system ensures that more young athletes feel encouraged and motivated to continue improving.
The Dolphins Junior Championships continue to experience remarkable growth year after year. The previous edition attracted nearly 500 swimmers, and Kasujja is optimistic about an even bigger turnout this year.
“We expect between 700 and 800 swimmers this time, given the increasing interest and improved performances seen in other competitions throughout the year,” Kasujja noted.
The 2026 edition of the Dolphins Junior Championships promises to be the biggest and most impactful yet, offering young swimmers not just a chance to compete but an opportunity to dream bigger in the sport.
