GLASGOW 2026: Enekwechi’s historic gold caps remarkable day for Team Nigeria

Team Nigeria delivered one of its strongest performances of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Day Seven, with impressive displays across the track and field producing multiple finalists and a historic gold medal.

Samuel Ogazi, Edidiong Udo and Udodi Onwuzurike all secured qualification for their respective finals, while Chinecherem Nnamdi booked a place in the men’s javelin final. The day’s biggest highlight, however, came from Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth gold in the men’s shot put.

Ogazi leads the way in 400m

Samuel Ogazi underlined his status as one of the favourites for the men’s 400m title with a commanding victory in the first semi-final.

The Nigerian crossed the line in 44.52 seconds, the fastest time ever recorded in a Commonwealth Games men’s 400m semi-final, comfortably finishing ahead of Botswana’s Lee Eppie (45.26s) and Jamaica’s Zandrion Barnes (45.38s).

The performance sends Ogazi into the final full of confidence as he bids to add another gold medal to Nigeria’s tally.

Nigeria’s hopes received another boost in the third semi-final as Edidiong Udo also secured qualification for the final.

Udo initially crossed the finish line in third place after clocking 45.53 seconds, but was promoted to second following the disqualification of Jamaica’s Antonio Watson, ensuring Nigeria will have two athletes contesting the men’s 400m final.

Onwuzurike storms into 200m final

Udodi Onwuzurike also kept Nigeria’s medal hopes alive by qualifying for the men’s 200m final.

The sprinter finished second in his semi-final with a time of 20.22 seconds, narrowly behind Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor, who won the race in 20.20 seconds.

Onwuzurike’s performance drew praise from defending Commonwealth champion Jereem Richards, who backed the Nigerian to challenge for the gold medal in the final.

Nnamdi secures javelin final place

In the men’s javelin qualification, Chinecherem Nnamdi produced a composed performance under difficult conditions to secure the final qualifying spot.

After battling strong winds throughout the competition, the Nigerian delivered when it mattered most, producing a throw of 75.27m with his final attempt to finish 12th overall and book his place in the final.

Historic gold for Enekwechi

The standout moment of the day belonged to Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who etched his name into Commonwealth Games history by becoming the first Nigerian to win gold in the men’s shot put.

The experienced thrower produced a winning mark of 21.07m in the fifth round to edge New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, who claimed silver with 21.03m, while England‘s Scott Lincoln settled for bronze after throwing 20.99m.

The victory was a fitting reward for Enekwechi, who has been one of Nigeria’s most consistent field athletes in recent years. Having won silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he finally climbed to the top of the podium with a championship-winning performance in Glasgow.

Nigeria builds momentum

Day Seven proved to be one of Team Nigeria‘s most productive outings of the Games.

With Samuel Ogazi and Edidiong Udo progressing to the men’s 400m final, Udodi Onwuzurike securing his place in the men’s 200m final, Chinecherem Nnamdi reaching the javelin final and Enekwechi delivering a historic gold medal, Nigeria strengthened its position as one of Africa’s leading forces in athletics.

As the athletics programme enters its decisive stages, Team Nigeria will be hoping to convert its growing list of finalists into more podium finishes and further enhance an already impressive campaign in Glasgow.
