UCU Canons hold off Rezlife Saints to claim NBL bronze

UCU Canons secured third place in the ongoing National Basketball League playoffs.

UCU Canons secured a well-deserved 72-64 victory against Rezlife Saints in the NBL encounter at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Sunday evening.

Michael Otieno’s trip on the charity line got the game underway before Ibanda Lwabaga responded with a driving layup.

Alier Pech’s jump shot capped off the opening frame as the Canons opened a slim one-point (16-15) lead.

The second quarter was end-to-end as the two sides went toe to toe, though Hon Kwany’s buzzer beater levelled the game 28-28 going into the long break.

Coming from the long break, Jimmy Otim dropped his shot beyond the arc to light up the crowd before Kwany responded with a jump shot.

However, at the end of the frame, the Canons dropped three uncontested baskets, thus opening up an eight-point (55-47) lead before the final quarter.

In the final frame, it was an even affair at 17-17 as the Canons took home a well-deserved victory on the day.

Jimmy Otim (12 points), Alier Pech (12 points), Lwabaga Ibanda (11 points) led the Canons in the double digits.

On the other hand, Hon Kwany (17 points), Chris Omanye (15 points), and Edrine Ekau (10 points) scored double digits for the Rezlife.
