Alex Iwobi takes charge of Project 17 in Baller League
Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has taken on a new challenge away from his playing career after being appointed manager of Project 17 in the Baller League.
Iwobi will combine the managerial role with his responsibilities as a Premier League player, with Baller League Season 4 scheduled to begin on 12 October 2026.
The appointment gives the Nigerian midfielder an opportunity to explore management while continuing his professional career at Fulham.

Iwobi embraces new challenge
Iwobi’s appointment with Project 17 is closely connected to his long-standing involvement in grassroots football and his P17 project.
The midfielder has previously spoken about his passion for street and small-sided football, making the move into Baller League a natural extension of his interests away from the Premier League.
“I’m not just a footballer; I like to express myself in many different ways, whether that’s music, fashion, charity. Anything really,” Iwobi said.
He added that football remains his primary focus but explained why the Baller League appealed to him.
“Of course, yes, I’m a footballer first and foremost. I like to show people who I am, and everyone knows I like to play football. I like to play street football, so it’s a part of me.”
Entertainment central to Iwobi’s approach
The 30-year-old midfielder said he intends to bring the same personality he displays as a player to his new managerial role.
“Alex Iwobi, the manager, he’s probably going to be the same as a player. Very chilled, very entertaining, very passionate. Wants his team to win,” he said.
Iwobi also wants his players to enjoy the experience while maintaining a competitive mentality.
“All about excitement. I just want my players to enjoy their football. That’s the advice I’ve been given as a kid,” he added.
“When I’m managing a team, I’m gonna tell them, ‘Look, of course we’re going to have tough times, tough games, but enjoy the craft, enjoy the challenge.’”
His approach reflects the character of the Baller League, where entertainment and fast-paced small-sided football form a central part of the competition.
Street football influence
Iwobi’s connection with small-sided football dates back to his upbringing, with the Fulham midfielder recalling his experiences playing street football and in cage-style competitions.
“Baller League is entertaining. I like the small-sided games. Even when I’m training, that’s probably one of the most exciting things I look forward to,” he said.
“I’ve come from playing street football in cages, Power League Fireball. It’s something I’m very passionate about. Sometimes I enjoy it more than the actual games.”
The midfielder believes that background will help shape his approach from the touchline as he takes charge of Project 17.
Iwobi joins high-profile managers
Iwobi becomes part of a Baller League managerial lineup that includes several prominent names from football and entertainment.
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards and ex-Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge are involved with Deportrio, while former England internationals Ian Wright and Jens Lehmann are also among the competition’s recognised figures. England international Chloe Kelly is another manager in the league. (ballerleague.uk)
The Baller League originated in Germany in 2024 before expanding to the UK, where it has developed into a high-profile six-a-side competition.
Season 4 will begin on 12 October, with matches played on Monday nights. The competition has also moved to a new purpose-built arena in Dagenham for the upcoming campaign. (ballerleague.uk)
Iwobi new role offers an opportunity to experience football from the touchline while remaining active on the pitch with Fulham.
His involvement adds another dimension to a career that has increasingly extended beyond playing, with the Nigerian also involved in music, fashion and community initiatives.

NBBF election: Oyedeji raises alarm over alleged interference
Former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji has expressed doubts about the credibility of Thursday’s Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) presidential election, alleging that some stakeholders are being pressured to influence the outcome.
Oyedeji, who is contesting for the federation’s presidency, said concerns over alleged interference involving state officials and changes to the delegate list had cast doubt on the transparency of the electoral process.
Speaking ahead of the 15 October poll in Abuja, the former national team captain called for an election in which delegates could exercise their voting rights without intimidation or undue influence.
He alleged that some individuals had contacted state governors and other government officials in an attempt to sway their positions ahead of the contest.
According to Oyedeji, the alleged interference included calls to stakeholders and attempts to influence their decisions in the run-up to the election.
“I mean, a couple of days before then, you send your letters in, I mean, you see intimidation, you see people calling the chairman,” he said.
He also claimed that a South-East governor had reached out to other governors, directors and commissioners, alleging that the contacts were intended to put pressure on those involved in the electoral process.
Oyedeji maintained that candidates should be allowed to compete on the strength of their support rather than through tactics that could undermine the credibility of the election.
He further questioned the rationale behind the alleged pressure on stakeholders, arguing that candidates confident of their backing should have no need to resort to such measures.
The claims, however, have not been independently verified.
Delegate list sparks further questions
Beyond the alleged pressure on stakeholders, Oyedeji expressed concern over reported changes to the list of delegates expected to participate in the election.
He suggested that the development had heightened his reservations about the process, questioning whether the poll would meet the standards of transparency and fairness expected of a federation-wide election.
“We have to have a free or fair election. We’re talking about the free, fair election. Are we gonna have a free election? Yes, are we going to have a fair election? I don’t know,” he said.
The presidential aspirant added that he was not convinced the process would be fair, given what he described as developments surrounding the delegate list.
“I don’t think so, because maybe we’re just going there to just start with what’s already been planned,” he said.
His comments place the spotlight on the electoral process as the federation prepares to elect its next leadership, with the conduct of the poll likely to be closely watched by candidates and basketball stakeholders.
Committee assures stakeholders
The NBBF presidential election is scheduled for Thursday, 15 October, at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.
The federation’s Electoral Committee, chaired by Dr Lanre Glover, has assured stakeholders that the election will be conducted freely and fairly, with candidates afforded equal opportunities under the applicable electoral guidelines.
As the election approaches , attention will be on the committee’s ability to address concerns surrounding the process and ensure that the election is transparent and credible.

LA 2028 Olympics qualifiers: Super Falcons thrash Comoros 7-0 on aggregate
The Super Falcons booked their place in the third round of the LA 2028 Olympics qualifiers after thrashing Comoros 5-0 in Tuesday’s second leg at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, to complete a commanding 7-0 aggregate victory.
Toni Payne and Uchenna Kanu scored twice each, while Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty as Nigeria turned their 2-0 first-leg advantage into a comprehensive victory on home soil.
The result sends the 10-time African champions into the next round, where they will face Morocco in their quest to secure a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Payne breaks the deadlock
The Super Falcons dominated much of the opening half but initially struggled to convert their chances into goals.
Nigeria suffered an early setback when captain Rasheedat Ajibade was forced off following a heavy collision in the 28th minute. Folashade Ijamilusi came on as her replacement.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 41st minute when Kanu capitalised on a mistake by the Comoros goalkeeper before squaring the ball for Payne to finish from close range.
Nigeria took their 1-0 lead into half-time, extending their aggregate advantage to 3-0.
Kanu and Payne strike again
The Super Falcons returned from the interval with greater attacking intent and doubled their lead on the night in the 58th minute.
Ijamilusi delivered a cross into the penalty area, which Kanu met with a header to make it 2-0 and further strengthen Nigeria’s grip on the tie.
Payne completed her brace in the 63rd minute after substitute Blessing Okpe beat two Comoros defenders before setting up the midfielder to finish.
Three minutes later, Kanu added her second goal of the match, heading home another Ijamilusi delivery to put Nigeria 4-0 ahead on the night.
The forward’s brace and Payne’s two goals underlined Nigeria’s attacking superiority as Comoros struggled to contain the hosts after the break.
Ucheibe completes the rout
Nigeria completed the scoring in the 71st minute when Ucheibe converted from the penalty spot.
The spot-kick was awarded after Okpe was fouled inside the penalty area, allowing Ucheibe to put the finishing touch on an emphatic performance.
The five-goal victory ensured that the Super Falcons advanced with a clean sheet across both legs, having also won the opening fixture 2-0.
Morocco await in third round
The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to Morocco in the third round of the African qualifying campaign.
Morocco advanced automatically after the Republic of the Congo withdrew from the competition, setting up a more demanding test for Nigeria as the race for Olympic qualification continues.
With only two places available for African teams at the LA 2028 Women’s Football Tournament, the Super Falcons will need to maintain their momentum as they pursue consecutive Olympic appearances following their return at Paris 2024.
Nigeria’s emphatic win over Comoros provides a strong platform, but the upcoming tie against Morocco will offer a clearer measure of their progress towards securing a place at the Games.

Inter Lagos part ways with head coach Giwa after poor NPFL start
Inter Lagos have parted ways with head coach Shakiru Giwa following a disappointing start to their debut Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign.
The newly promoted side sit at the bottom of the league table after struggling to establish themselves in the top flight, with Giwa’s departure leaving the club facing an early fight to secure their NPFL status.
Inter Lagos struggle in debut NPFL campaign
Inter Lagos secured promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) after an impressive campaign, raising expectations ahead of their first appearance in the NPFL.
However, the transition to the top flight has proved difficult, with the Lagos-based club struggling to maintain consistency against more experienced opposition.
Their campaign began with a 2-1 defeat to Shooting Stars in Ibadan, although captain Uchenna Njoku made history by scoring the club’s first-ever NPFL goal.
Inter Lagos subsequently suffered a 3-0 loss to city rivals Sporting Lagos before responding with a 1-0 away victory over former African champions Enyimba in Aba.
The win demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level of domestic football, but their inability to build on that result has left them struggling for points.
Inter Lagos face crucial coaching decision
Giwa’s departure presents the club’s management with an important decision as they seek to revive their campaign and avoid being dragged further into the relegation battle.
The next appointment will be crucial, with Inter Lagos needing to improve their defensive organisation, become more effective in front of goal and find greater consistency across their remaining fixtures.
With the season still unfolding, the club must also ensure that any managerial change translates into improved performances and results on the pitch.
Inter Lagos target NPFL survival
Despite the difficult start, Inter Lagos had made their priorities clear before the season began, with survival identified as the primary objective of their debut top-flight campaign.
Club chief executive Lanre Vigo reiterated that ambition after the team’s 3-0 defeat to Sporting Lagos in September.
“We are a young team, we are growing. We are going to survive this league; that is our plan,” Vigo said.

The statement underlined the club’s determination to establish themselves in the NPFL despite the challenges associated with competing at the highest level of Nigerian domestic football.
Inter Lagos must now respond to Giwa’s departure with an improved run of results if they are to turn their difficult start into a successful battle for survival.
