FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos gear up for Mexico clash
Nigeria‘s Flamingos are intensifying preparations for their Round of 16 clash against Mexico at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as they seek a place in the quarter-finals.
The encounter is scheduled for Thursday at 4pm Nigerian time at Pitch 2 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, Morocco, with both teams aiming to progress to the next stage of the competition.
The Flamingos advanced to the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B with six points, while Mexico also secured second place in Group F following a 1-0 victory over Australia.
Nigeria will be looking to build on their group-stage performances as they prepare for a challenging encounter against a Mexican side that has also shown its ability to compete at the tournament.
Ikpeme charges Flamingos to maintain focus
The team received encouragement ahead of the fixture when the Nigeria Football Federation’s Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, visited their training session on Monday.
Ikpeme congratulated the players on reaching the knockout stage and urged them to remain focused and determined as they prepare for the decisive encounter.
He also assured the team of his support and promised to attend Thursday’s match as the Flamingos seek to continue their campaign in Morocco.
The visit comes as Nigeria prepare for a crucial test that will require concentration, discipline and clinical finishing against their opponents.
Adegbuyi, Umejiaku lead Nigeria’s attack
The Flamingos have scored six goals in three group-stage matches, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Oluebube Umejiaku contributing two goals each.
Precious Oscar has also found the net, while Rodiat Kanyinsola Yusuf scored a free-kick in Nigeria’s 3-1 victory over Korea DPR.
The contributions from different players have given Nigeria several attacking options heading into the Round of 16, although they will need to maintain their scoring form against Mexico.
Defensively, the team will also be expected to remain organised and limit the opportunities available to their opponents in a match where a single mistake could prove costly.
Flamingos seek repeat of 2014 victory
Nigeria and Mexico have met once previously at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, with the Flamingos recording a 3-0 victory on 23 March 2014.
Nigeria will hope that history provides further motivation as they pursue another quarter-final appearance, but Thursday’s encounter presents a fresh challenge against a side determined to advance.
The Flamingos won the bronze medal at the 2022 edition in India, while Mexico also secured bronze at the 2024 tournament in Morocco.
Both teams therefore arrive with experience of competing for honours at this level, setting up an important contest as the knockout stage gets underway.
Victory for Nigeria would keep their hopes of another deep run alive and bring them a step closer to challenging for the title.
