Taiwo Awoniyi honored at Best of Africa charity award

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has received the Beyond the Pitch Award at the 2026 Best of Africa Awards in London, recognising his philanthropic efforts and contributions to grassroots football development in Nigeria.

The Coventry City forward was honoured on Monday for his commitment to community development and initiatives designed to create opportunities for young footballers.

The award, presented in partnership with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), celebrates players whose influence extends beyond their performances on the pitch.

Awoniyi’s recognition highlights the importance of using professional football as a platform to support communities, nurture emerging talent and inspire the next generation.

Taiwo Awoniyi’s grassroots football commitment

Beyond his responsibilities as a professional footballer, Taiwo Awoniyi has maintained an interest in youth development and initiatives that support aspiring players in Nigeria.

His recognition reflects the value of investing in grassroots football, where young talents often need access to proper facilities, coaching and opportunities to progress.

For many aspiring footballers, the journey towards professional football begins in local communities and academies. Support from established players can help strengthen these pathways and encourage more young people to pursue their ambitions.

Awoniyi’s latest honour also brings attention to the wider role professional athletes can play in community development, particularly through charitable initiatives and youth-focused programmes.

The striker attended the ceremony alongside his wife, his brother Victor Awoniyi, other family members, friends and members of his team, who joined him to celebrate the achievement.

Taiwo Awoniyi and the importance of life beyond football

The award comes as Awoniyi continues to develop his interests away from the pitch, including his commitment to education and personal growth.

In an interview with The Athletic NG published on October 8, 2026, the Nigerian international discussed the importance of maintaining an identity beyond professional football.

“There are a lot of things that are bigger than football,” Awoniyi said.

He added: “Yes, football is our passion but we are normal human beings as well and maybe that’s something the world doesn’t always see.”

His comments reflect a broader conversation about the responsibilities and opportunities that come with being a professional athlete.

Footballers can influence young people through their performances, personal experiences and contributions to society. Their involvement in education, philanthropy and grassroots development can also help create a lasting impact beyond their playing careers.
