NSC chief hails Adamu’s appointment as CAF General Secretary
National Sports Commission (NSC) Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade congratulated Samson Adamu on his emergence as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Olopade called it a landmark achievement for Nigerian sports governance after Adamu became the first Nigerian CAF General Secretary in its 70-year history.
The appointment is a massive breakthrough for Nigerian sports governance.
National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko also hailed it as a landmark achievement that places Nigeria at the forefront of shaping football‘s future across Africa.
The significance of Adamu’s appointment for Nigeria
The National Sports Commission (NSC) Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, emphasized that the milestone brings national pride, inspires, and paves the way for future sports administrators within international sporting organisations.
Adamu’s appointment follows roles as Director of Competitions and Director of Tournaments before serving as acting and now substantive General Secretary, supporting the NSC’s goal to boost Nigeria’s global sports influence.
The Director General said Adamu’s appointment was particularly gratifying because it followed years of professional service, experience and progressive responsibility within the continental football body.
“On behalf of all Nigerians, I congratulate Samson Adamu on this appointment. It is a proud moment for Nigeria.
It is encouraging to see a Nigerian rise to such a strategic position in African football through years of hard work, competence and commitment,” Olopade said.
“This is the kind of achievement that should inspire young Nigerians to understand that sports administration offers enormous opportunities for professional growth and international recognition,” he added.
His emergence also reinforces our belief that Nigeria has the human capacity to contribute meaningfully to the leadership and development of sports across Africa,” Hon. Olopade said.
Adamu’s interim to substantive role
Samson Adamu took over as Acting General Secretary of CAF in March 2026 after the previous General Secretary, Véron Mosengo-Omba, resigned.
His exceptional performance in the interim role led to his official confirmation as the permanent, substantive office holder.
Adamu first joined CAF in 2018, where he served as the Director of Competitions and later as the Director of Tournaments and Events, where he managed match operations and tournament deliveries across the continent before stepping into the top administrative role.
Adamu’s appointment is seen as a strategic advantage as the nation collaborates closely with CAF to finalize the hosting of major upcoming events, including the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly and the prestigious CAF Awards later this year.
Hon. Olopade wished the new CAF General Secretary success in the discharge of his responsibilities and urged him to remain a worthy ambassador of Nigeria in his new position.
