The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has on Wednesday confirmed receipt of the appeal lodged by the Senegalese Football Federation in regard to the 2025 AFCON final.

The appeal follows a decision by CAF to strip the Lions of Teranga of their 2025 AFCON triumph that took place on 18th January in Rabat, Morocco.

The final that was marred by controversy saw Senegal edge Morocco 1-0 in extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. However, the Senegalese players walked off the pitch for some minutes before returning to complete the game.

Last week, CAF through its Appeals Body ruled that Senegal lost the game by forfeiture and thus Morocco were announced as Champions.

The aforementioned decision was vehmently rejected by Senegal who have now sought legal redress in CAS.

In their appeal to CAS, Senegal seek that the decision by CAF is set aside and the former is re-installed as AFCON 2025 Champions.

“A CAS Arbitral Panel will be appointed to consider this matter. Following this, a procedural calendar will be established. In accordance with CAS procedural rules, an Appellant has twenty days to file an appeal brief with legal arguments, and the Respondents then have a further twenty days to submit an answer containing a statement of defence. At this early stage of proceedings and considering the FSF request to suspend deadlines, it is not possible to anticipate a procedural timeline and to indicate when a hearing will be scheduled.” Reads a statement from CAS.

Matthieu Reeb, CAS Director General stated that “CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the assistance of expert and independent arbitrators. We understand that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and we will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing.”
