Fernandez was a second-half replacement for Semi Ajayi as the Super Eagles beat Iran 2-1 in a friendly against Iran in Antalya, Turkey.

“I always wanted to play for my nation, that’s why I am from and where my family are from,” he told the Rangers official TV.

“People thought I won’t make it, but I aIways had the faith I will get there.

“My family are proud and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

The interview revealed that six years ago, he did not have a club after he was released during the Covid outbreak and that the No 37 he wears at his Scottish club is a tribute to his older brother, who died when he was only 37.
