Australia overcame Turkiye 2-0 in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at BC Place Vancouver on Sunday morning.
A goal in each half from Nestroy Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe inspired Australia to a memorable victory.
Irankunda, who features for Watford, became the youngest-ever scorer for Australia at the FIFA World Cup.
Born in Kigoma, Tanzania, to Burundian parents, Irankunda lit up the game with a sublime 27th-minute finish.
Metcalfe wound up the scoring business in the 75th minute.
Australia now has 3 points and two goals, the same number of points as co-hosts United States of America (USA) who smiled 4-1 past South Africans Paraguay on Friday.
Folarin Balogun struck a brace with Damian Bobadilla’s own goal and a late Giovanno Reyna’s strike completing the goal galore.
Brazilian-born Mauricio Magalhaes Prado got Paraguay’s consolation goal in the 71st minute of the game.

USA will face Australia on 19th June 2026 at the Seattle Stadium in Seattle, with the outright winner on the day booking a berth in the knockout round.
Meanwhile, Turkiye will take on Paraguay on 20th June 2026 at the San Francisco Bay Area stadium in Santa Clara.
