Argentina recovered from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 during the round of 16 duel in the on-going 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Atlanta stadium.

Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko scored for the African representatives who led 2-0 at some stage of the game.

With 11 minutes to play; Cristian Romero, skipper Lionel Andres Messi and Enzo Fernandez replied for Argentina.

Yasser Ibrahim put Egypt ahead in the 12th minute. Messi missed the opportunity to equalize from 12 yards when his penalty was saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir.

Ziko made it 2-0 for Egypt in the 67th minute.

Cristian Romero pulled back a goal for Argentina in the 79th minute before Messi volleyed home the equalizer four minutes later.

This was Messi’s 8th goal of the competition, taking his overall tally in the FIFA World Cup to 21 goals.

With the game destined for extra time, Enzo Fernandez harbored other ideas altogether, heading home the winner in the third minute of the 7 added minutes.

Argentina will face either Switzerland or Colombia at the quarter finals on 11th July 2026.
