FIFA President Infatino lauds Cameroon on historic WAFCON success

After several years of endurance and nearly misses, Cameroon eventually etched their name in the history books by clinching their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title after overcoming Malawi in the final on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.

The Indomitable Lionesses cruised to a 3-0 win over the Scorchers thanks to goals from Marie Ngah (brace) and Ndjoah Eto.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino who graced the final in Rabat has come to thank CAF and WAFCON 2026 hosts Morocco, indicating the tournament was a huge success.

“The African Cup of Nations, organised by CAF and by Morocco, was a huge, huge success. Congratulations to CAF, to Morocco, to all the teams, to all the fantastic fans,” he said as quoted by FIFA.

“A big thanks to the Confederation of African Football, led by President Patrice Motsepe, the Moroccan Football Association, led by President Fouzi Lekjaa, and all the wonderful people of Morocco for organising this fantastic tournament that shone a spotlight on women’s football,” the FIFA President added.

Infantino went ahead to extend his congratulatory message to Champions Cameroon for a remarkable tournament they had.

“Congratulations to Cameroon on winning the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and giving great joy to your beautiful, football-loving nation with this historic first triumph,” Infantino said.

Additionally, the FIFA President also lauded Malawi for a wonderful journey on their maiden appearance at this tournament.

“They (Malawi) made not just the country dream, but everyone that loves football. You have plenty to be proud of.”

Cameroon, Malawi, Algeria and Morocco earned direct tickets to play at next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup while Ghana and South Africa will go through a playoff phase for the extra slot available for Africa.
