Women’s Premiership: Avengers, Nile Rapids join title race
It is no longer a two-horse race between the Thunderbirds and Black Pearls; the Avengers and Nile Rapids have thrown their hats in the ring for the Premiership title.
The Nile Rapids are still unbeaten and have shown serious intent to compete for the title by first defeating the top contenders, the Thunderbirds, on the opening weekend.
The Avengers were the next big challenge for the Jinja ladies, but both teams managed to share the spoils under tough weather conditions in Entebbe.
Most recently, the Rapids made light work of the defending champions, the Black Pearls, leading them by 22 points to 03 in the first half, before seeing off the game in the second half.
On the other hand, the Avengers have been flying high, only losing to the Thunderbirds, but still walking away with a losing bonus point. Before the Enterprise Cup break, the Avengers recorded the biggest winning margin of Game Week 6, beating the She Wolves 39-00 in Mbale. This victory ensured they remained the team with the biggest points difference in the league, should it come down to the wire at the end of the season.
Not all hope is lost for the defending champions. The Pearls suffered back-to-back defeats against the Thunderbirds (25 -21) and the Rapids (25-17), margins that can easily be closed and exceeded if the Pearls get their act right in the return legs.
Apart from that 22-13 stumble at the hands of the Nile Rapids in Game Week 1, the Thunderbirds have been flawless so far, and this could finally be their time. They simply have to hold on till the end.
At the bottom end of the table, the Ewes, She Wolves and Panthers are safe from relegation for another season, as the Uganda Rugby Union declared 2026 a year of “Consolidation and Transition”.
Since the expansion of the women’s league to 7 teams, these three sides have always finished in the bottom 3 and really need to step up, if not for themselves, then for the Lady Cranes’ sake.
