Goalkeeper Lawal gets support to bounce back
Genk goalkeeper Tobias Lawal, who at time was on the Super Eagles radar, has come under fire from even the fans of his Belgian club after a series of costly mistakes, but his former club said he believes he will bounce back to top reckoning soon.
The player’s former coach Andreas Wieland said he believes that Lawal can still fight back.
“I have seen Tobias grow from a shy academy player to a goalkeeper in LASK’s first team,” Wieland told Het Belang Van Limburg.
“He is a very good shot-stopper and quite fast for his height. But his footwork remains an area for improvement. You saw that in the first leg against Freiburg in the Europa League as well.”
Lawal now has to get through that difficult period.
“Tobi is someone who needs to feel confident. First and foremost from his coach, but also from those around him and his supporters. Then he can reach his best level. He certainly possesses the qualities to succeed in Belgium,” the coach added.
The question is whether he will still get the chance to prove himself. With Hendrik Van Crombrugge and Luca Brughmans, two alternatives are ready.
