PBA: Chris Newsome’s late heroics lift Meralco past Blackwater
Chris Newsome nailed the go-ahead bucket with 3.9 seconds left to tow Meralco past Blackwater, 116-114, for its second win in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Tuesday night.
The star guard came through under duress time and again, making sure not to waste Chris Banchero’s pass and to close out a crazy sequence that saw both squads exchange misses in a bid to get the lead.
The Bossing had one last chance to take the game away and went to RK Ilagan in the final possession, but the spitfire PG lost control of the ball when his attempt to evade the defense through a crossover dribble failed as the ball hit his foot, and never had the chance to recover as time expired.
Newsome finished with 16 points to help Meralco avert disaster after blowing a 19-point lead, and more importantly net their second win in a row while dealing the opposition its first loss.
