WAFU B U-17 GIRLS’ CUP: Flamingos extend unbeaten streak with 2-0 win against host nation Côte d’Ivoire

The Nigerian Flamingos extend their winning streak by four games after defeating tournament hosts, Côte d’Ivoire 2-0 in their fourth gam eof the WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup.

The Flamingos continued their impressive run in the match, played on Thursday in Yamoussoukro.

This statement victory puts Nigeria comfortably at the top of the table.

Flamingos strike in first half

Barely four minutes into the game, the Flamingos scored the first goal through Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.

Adegbuyi converted Sakirat Sarafa’s perfect cross into the box, and Nigeria found the back of the net.

The goal marked Adegbuyi’s third goal in the tournament after scoring against Ghana and Burkina Faso in previous matches.

Flamingos goalkeeper Onyiyechi Opara produced a significant save during the first-half stoppage time to deny Côte d’Ivoire.
Nigeria held on to that advantage till half-time.

 Flamingos extend lead

Pattra Oparanmegwa came on for Mary Dunstan in the 80th minute in a double substitution.

In the 83rd minute, Oparanmegwa doubled Nigeria’s lead through an awarded long-range free-kick as she beat Côte d’Ivoire’s goalkeeper.

This free-kick goal sealed Nigeria’s victory.
The Flamingos now have 12 points from four games, with four wins from four.

 Post-match reactions

Head coach Akeem Busari praised the Côte d’Ivoire team in a post-match interview on Thursday.

“It wasn’t an easy match because if you look at the Côte d’Ivoire side, they are not a pushover side. Both physically and tactically, they have a strong link. They are strong on the ball and have a good kick,” Busari said.

He further said that the Flamingos managed to edge Côte d’Ivoire based on their good tactical approach.

“We used quick counter-transition because we knew they have the size, but anytime we have a quick counter-transition, we open up the game to the flank and put them to run,” he said.

He also claimed that Côte d’Ivoire were lucky due to Nigeria’s wasted chances, which could have wrapped the game up in the first half.
He admitted that the game was a very tough one for the two teams.

 Another step towards Morocco

Head coach Akeem Busari also spoke on the Flamingos preparations towards the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Busari said the team is recognizing their strengths and weaknesses while actively working on them.

“For this present moment, we are able to identify our strong points and deficiencies, and we have another one ahead, which is the World Cup, so we know what we need to work on,” he stated.

Nigeria have now beaten every opponent they have faced in Yamoussoukro and have conceded only twice in four matches.
With four consecutive victories now secured, Nigeria will head into their final fixture full of confidence as they continue their preparations ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria will wrap up their tournament campaign against Togo on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
